A new survey has found that banks are sitting on a large crypto opportunity they have yet to tap.

The finding comes from the National Cryptocurrency Association’s 2026 Crypto at the Bank Report. It is based on a Harris Poll survey conducted Sept. 15 to 16.

About 168 million Americans, or 64% of adults, say no one at their bank, credit union or financial advisor’s office has ever raised the topic of crypto with them.

The gap is widest among old Americans

Only 42% of adults aged 18 to 34 say their institution has never discussed crypto, compared with 92% of those 65 and older. Another 43% of Americans don’t know whether their bank offers crypto at all.

Demand is already there

The survey found that 112 million Americans, or 42%, would be more likely to open an account with a bank that offers crypto, or use it for more of their financial needs.

About 156 million, or 59%, said they would be comfortable with their bank holding their crypto.

Among parents of children under 18, the share more likely to bank with a crypto-friendly institution rose to 62%.

“The demand is sitting in front of these institutions, but most are missing the opportunity,” said Stuart Alderoty, president of the NCA.

Banks still have trust on their side

Americans still trust banks for crypto advice. Some 64% said they are confident their bank or credit union could give reliable guidance, behind only financial advisors at 67%. Just 39% said the same about social media.

“While crypto platforms are increasingly offering access to traditional financial services, Americans expect the financial institutions they already know and trust to also offer crypto access,” Alderoty added.

The most wanted bank services were crypto ETFs or funds and buying and holding crypto, each at 22%.

Looking ahead, 60% of Americans expect most US banks to offer crypto within a decade. Among adults aged 18 to 34, that share rises to 74%.
