WhatsApp

WhatsApp has evolved into one of the world’s most widely used communication tools, enabling users to send messages, make voice and video calls, share files, and create communities.

From staying connected with family and friends to engaging with tech communities and receiving real-time alerts from work tools, it keeps women in tech plugged into both personal and professional networks wherever they are.

Beyond personal communication, the app has become a vital tool for remote collaboration, customer engagement, and knowledge sharing within the tech ecosystem. Startups, founders, developers, and communities across Africa frequently use WhatsApp to coordinate projects, share opportunities, and build professional networks.

According to industry reports, WhatsApp remains one of the most popular messaging applications across Africa, with Nigeria having over 51 million active WhatsApp users.

Gmail is Google’s email service that enables users to send and receive emails, organise communications, schedule meetings, and integrate seamlessly with productivity tools such as Google Drive, Calendar, and Meet.

Within the tech ecosystem, Gmail remains an essential productivity tool for women managing multiple responsibilities and time zones.

A woman in tech shared that she uses Gmail daily because she is constantly checking client updates, project notifications, and important communications that keep her work moving seamlessly.

A Notes app serves as a digital workspace for capturing ideas, creating checklists, storing information, and organising thoughts.

Whether Apple’s Notes or Google Keep, note-taking applications have become indispensable productivity tools for professionals seeking to document insights, brainstorm solutions, and manage tasks efficiently.

For many women in tech, the Notes app serves as a digital brain. It is where ideas are captured, tasks are organised, and fleeting thoughts are preserved before they disappear.

As one respondent explained, “Everything lives there—my ideas, tasks, and half-formed thoughts. I write almost everything there first.”

Settings AppSettings app

While it may seem unconventional, the Settings app emerged as one of the most indispensable tools. Several women highlighted that it gives them control over how their devices function, helping them manage notifications, optimise focus, and create boundaries between work and rest.

One respondent noted, “If I were on vacation, I could do without every app on my phone. But in my day-to-day routine, the Settings app is essential because it enables me to control everything else on my mobile.”

YouTubeYouTube app

YouTube is the world’s largest video-sharing platform, hosting educational content, tutorials, documentaries, webinars, and industry discussions across virtually every field.

With millions of users across Africa, YouTube has become a leading destination for learning and professional development, particularly among young professionals and digital creators.

Many women in tech rely on YouTube as an everyday learning companion. Whether watching tutorials, exploring industry trends, or binge-watching documentaries, the platform supports continuous learning and skill development.

As one participant put it, “I’m constantly either looking something up or going down a learning rabbit hole—both have become part of my everyday routine.”

LinkedInLinkedIn app

LinkedIn is more than a professional networking platform for women in tech; it is a source of industry insights and community engagement. It helps them stay updated on emerging trends, join conversations shaping the tech ecosystem, discover opportunities, and learn from professionals across the industry.

For many, LinkedIn serves as a window into what is happening in the broader tech space and a platform for building meaningful professional relationships.

Interestingly, the most frequently mentioned apps were not highly specialised tech tools. Instead, they reflected three core needs: communication, organisation, and continuous learning. Together, they illustrate how women in tech balance productivity, professional growth, and everyday life through a relatively simple set of digital tools.
