The Momentum Fund, the Aero Foundation's flagship program for @aeroxyz, bought 243,000 $AERO this week and staked all of it, rather than burning the tokens as it did in its two earlier buybacks.
Like any other staker, the fund can now use the staked tokens to direct rewards to trading markets and earn a share of exchange revenue. The fund times its purchases to market conditions rather than a fixed schedule, and it does not sell.
The fund's first two buybacks were burned outright. The first removed 174,000 AERO, worth about $122,000.The second, a burn of 233,000 tokens, came within the same week. Burning permanently removes tokens from circulation, whereas staking keeps them in the fund's hands with voting and revenue rights attached.
Aero's own economic overview says the fund has flexibility in how it uses its resources. The Aero Foundation runs the fund and can hold revenue in reserve, spend it on buybacks, or share part of it with builders through Align. The same document notes that tokens the fund buys back can be burned, which removes supply without diluting other holders' revenue share.
The fund is also a large participant in the staking system. It holds more sAERO than any other participant in the ecosystem. Aero says a market-aware approach is deliberate. A buyback on a fixed schedule would spend the same amount whether AERO is cheap or expensive, and its predictability would let other traders buy ahead of it.
The Momentum Fund operates under the merged Aero exchange. Aerodrome and Velodrome merged on 21 October 2026 to form Aero, a single spot exchange spanning seven networks.Existing AERO and VELO tokens migrate to one new AERO token, with veAERO and veVELO converting to staked sAERO.
The new structure changes how staking works. Holders stake AERO and direct the liquidity rewards budget toward markets they expect to generate revenue, replacing the weekly emissions votes used by Aerodrome and Velodrome. That is the mechanism the fund now taps with its newly staked tokens.
The Momentum Fund also builds on earlier programs. Its predecessors, the Public Goods Fund and Flight School, have bought back or locked about 110 million AERO, about 11% of circulating supply. Those programs bought and locked tokens, while the Momentum Fund can also burn them.
As with any buyback, the outcome for the token price is not guaranteed. The fund's rules are designed to respond to market conditions rather than target a specific price level.
