AI agents have made more than 13 million payments on the XRP Ledger(XRP) and now account for about a quarter of its activity, RippleX engineering head Ayo Akinyele said.

Key Points:

  • AI agents have made more than 13 million x402 payments on the XRP Ledger, according to RippleX's engineering head.
  • Akinyele estimates agentic payments make up roughly 25% of ledger activity, though settled amounts remain small.
  • Former Ripple product lead Chandler Fang expects more real-world merchants to accept XRP and RLUSD from agents.

XRP Ledger Payments

Akinyele wrote on X late last week that the ledger had processed more than 13 million agentic transactions, with 166 merchants accepting payments through the x402 protocol. He gave no method or time frame for his 25% estimate.

A tracker run by t54, a startup backed by Ripple, showed 13,417,943 payments around the time of the post, with a seven-day average of 216,145 a day. The company's XRPL AI Hub later listed 13,489,468 transactions and 168 merchants, while cumulative settlements came to roughly 6,982 XRP and 12,010 Ripple USD(RLUSD). The count has since passed 13.6 million.

First developed by Coinbase, x402 lets software agents pay for data, computing power and other online services without a person approving each charge, using the long-dormant HTTP 402 "Payment Required" code. Ripple is a premier member of the x402 Foundation, which now governs the standard.

Chandler Fang Outlook

Chandler Fang, a former Ripple product lead who co-founded t54, pointed to the jump from about 1 million agentic transactions in July to more than 13 million this month. He expects the next phase to bring more real-world merchants and services onchain, with agents paying in XRP or RLUSD and settling through t54's x402 facilitator. He did not name new partners or set a target.

Akinyele used his post to court developers, writing that agents already pay for APIs, data and computing power, and pointing to the ledger's low fees, fast settlement and growing set of AI tools. He added that 100 million payments "might actually come sooner than we expect."

Akinyele 100M Forecast

Many of the payments counted so far involve small amounts. Neither Ripple nor t54 has set a date for reaching 100 million, and the hub's data does not show how much activity comes from independent businesses, repeated automated requests or experimental apps.

When the ledger had handled about 1.4 million agentic payments in July, the fees those transactions generated came to roughly $280 in total.

The ledger logged its first 1 million agentic payments on Jul. 8, and Akinyele told reporters later that month he expected it to "blast through 10 million." At the time, he said the network might even reach 100 million within the next couple of years, a milestone his latest post suggests could arrive sooner.
