Cryptocurrency security changed in 2026. Artificial intelligence began catching critical vulnerabilities that years of expert human audits missed. Coin Bureau recently highlighted three separate incidents where AI systems protected a combined $190 billion in crypto assets.

The XRP Ledger’s Decade-Old Time Bomb

The most technically striking discovery came from Veria Labs. Its AI system, Veria AI, identified an integer overflow bug buried in the XRP Ledger’s payment engine since 2015. The flaw could have allowed a single transaction to mint 18.45 trillion XRP, 184 times the token’s total supply of 100 billion.

Veria Labs confirmed the attack was repeatable, meaning an attacker could have minted unlimited XRP in batches of 18.45 trillion. With XRP’s market cap sitting near $94 billion at the time of disclosure, the potential damage was catastrophic.

The team received the maximum bug bounty of $250,000. The XRP Ledger Foundation confirmed no unauthorized tokens were ever created.

Cantina’s Apex Catches a Signature Bypass

Earlier in 2026, Cantina AI’s autonomous bug-hunting tool, Apex, identified a critical logic flaw in XRPL’s proposed Batch amendment. The flaw lived inside the signature-validation process. An attacker could have constructed a batch transaction that moved funds from victim accounts without ever accessing their private keys.

Cantina and Spearbit CEO Hari Mulackal stated the vulnerability put “nearly $80 billion at direct risk.” Validators rejected the amendment, and an emergency patch followed.

The Zcash Counterfeiting Flaw

On May 29, security researcher Taylor Hornby used Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 alongside a custom analysis suite to audit Zcash’s Orchard shielded pool. He found a flaw that had existed since the pool launched in May 2022. The bug allowed an attacker to generate unlimited, undetectable counterfeit ZEC.

The zero-knowledge proof system would have validated the fraudulent transactions as legitimate. Hornby reported it, and a patch was deployed on June 2. ZEC’s price still fell sharply after disclosure, but no confirmed exploitation occurred.

AI is no longer just a tool for building products. In crypto, it is becoming the infrastructure that protects them.

XRP’s AI Infrastructure Continues to Grow

While AI tools have made significant advancements in security, XRP is advancing on a separate AI front. The x402 protocol enables AI agents to pay for APIs and computing services autonomously. XRPL has processed over 10 million x402 payments, reaching that figure less than three months after crossing 1 million.

Ripple joined the x402 Foundation as a Premier Member alongside Visa, Mastercard, Google, and Stripe. AI transactions now make up 25% of transactions on the network, and the XRPL AI Hub now lists 160 merchants and 2,276 live services.
