Akash Network's core team wants to leave its Cosmos (@cosmos) $ATOM-based blockchain and rebuild its computing marketplace on Solana (@solana) $SOL. The proposal to do so is already drawing overwhelming support from $AKT stakers.
Akash Network (@akashnet) is a decentralized marketplace where users rent GPU and cloud compute from independent providers. It currently runs on its own Cosmos chain, akashnet-2, according to Solana Compass.
Proposal 346: vote and token plan
Proposal 346 has 98.15% support, with turnout at 42.84% of bonded stake, according to Mintscan. That is above the 33.4% quorum set for the vote, The Defiant reported. Voting closes on November 2.
The plan includes a one-for-one conversion from $AKT to Solana-based tokens. Crypto Briefing reported that AKT would become an SPL token, with total supply unchanged and six decimal places preserved. The migration portal would remain open for two years. Two independent audits must be completed before the token launch.
Staked tokens face an extra step. Phemex reported that staked AKT must go through a 21-day unstaking period before it can be migrated.
Why Akash wants to leave its own chain
The team says operating its own chain ties up AKT in security and consumes engineering resources. Phemex also reported that Akash cited operating costs under load, the lack of a single operator and the concentration of the DePIN ecosystem on Solana as drivers of the decision.
Approval of Proposal 346 would authorize the token launch, not move the marketplace itself. The Defiant reported that the marketplace cutover has no date and requires a separate governance vote after audits and migration rehearsals pass. If that later cutover passes, the old chain would halt 90 days afterward.
Akash founder Greg Osuri has described the move as official. Solana Compass noted he also said there is still a small chance voters could change their decision, and votes can still move until the window closes.
Solana Compass also pointed to Helium, which moved its network to Solana in 2023, as a precedent for a project retiring its own layer-1 chain into another.
