The market movement stemmed from an unusual public statement by Google DeepMind leadership. Koray Kavukcuoglu, the division’s current chief, disclosed that Gemini 4’s arrival is more imminent than market observers had anticipated.

Speaking at Wednesday’s AI Agenda Live Summit hosted by The Information, Kavukcuoglu made his first substantive media comments since ascending to DeepMind’s leadership position.

According to Kavukcuoglu, Gemini 4 has advanced to the post-training stage. This critical development phase involves fine-tuning the foundational model to enhance consistency and dependability in real-world applications.

“Our intention is to, like, as soon as possible, to release an early post-training output because we see the results and we are excited,” Kavukcuoglu stated. He emphasized that Google intends to “continue the fast-paced iterations” following the initial deployment.

DeepMind Undergoes Major Leadership Transition

This development arrives amid significant organizational changes within DeepMind. Demis Hassabis, the former artificial intelligence leader, departed his position last August.

Prior to his exit, Hassabis indicated that “great progress” was underway regarding Gemini 4. Kavukcuoglu has inherited this initiative and now shapes public expectations surrounding the model’s availability.

Kavukcuoglu indicated the system should debut “much earlier” than late 2026. Such timing would represent an acceleration in Google’s artificial intelligence development schedule.

Google Struggles to Maintain AI Leadership Position

Google’s previous flagship offering, Gemini 3, launched in November 2025. In the intervening months, competitive pressure has intensified substantially.

OpenAI unveiled GPT-6 during this window. Anthropic introduced its Mythos product line as well. Industry assessments suggest both surpass Gemini 3’s capabilities, providing meaningful competitive advantages.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai had previously addressed these concerns. During May’s I/O conference, he committed to delivering a substantial Gemini 3.5 Pro enhancement by June.

That promised update never materialized. Kavukcuoglu addressed this Wednesday, acknowledging Google “took a little bit of a step back.”

Rather than releasing Gemini 3.5 Pro, the organization pivoted toward developing compact, efficient Flash variants. This strategic shift diverges from Pichai’s earlier public commitments.

When questioned about concerns regarding Google’s competitive position, Kavukcuoglu responded confidently. “In my mind, it’s a certainty that we are always gonna be at the frontier,” he declared to The Information.

Simultaneously, Meta’s artificial intelligence initiatives have expanded their user base. The company reported accelerating adoption of its AI capabilities through September, intensifying competition in an already saturated marketplace.

Presently, Gemini 4 remains unavailable to the public. Kavukcuoglu’s remarks represent the most definitive indication yet of an approaching launch, though Google has not committed to a specific release date.
