Cuomo Joins OKX Board After Advising Exchange Since 2023
Former New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has joined the Board of Directors of crypto exchange OKX, formalizing a relationship that began in 2023 when he started advising the company on U.S. regulatory and institutional strategy.
Cuomo previously served as New York’s 56th governor, New York State attorney general and U.S. secretary of housing and urban development. OKX said his appointment adds public-sector and regulatory experience to its leadership as the company expands its presence in the United States.
OKX Founder and CEO Star Xu said:
“Governor Cuomo has been a thoughtful voice for OKX for years, and his move to the board formalizes a relationship that has already shaped how we approach the U.S. market”.
In a statement on X, Star Xu said Cuomo had been a trusted advisor to OKX since 2023 and described his addition to the board as another step in the company’s 2026 expansion. OKX said it is continuing to build a large digital asset exchange and broader financial infrastructure platform.
OKX Builds Broader Financial Infrastructure Strategy
The company said its expansion is supported by a licensing footprint spanning the United States, the United Arab Emirates, the European Economic Area, Singapore and Australia, alongside monthly Proof of Reserves reporting.
OKX said Cuomo’s move to the board reflects the company’s broader direction as it seeks to operate across traditional finance, digital assets and blockchain-based infrastructure. The appointment also follows the exchange’s growing engagement with institutional and regulatory stakeholders in the U.S. market.
Appointment Follows OKX’s 2026 Expansion
The board appointment comes during a period of significant expansion for OKX. In March 2026, Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, made a strategic investment in OKX that valued the crypto exchange at approximately $25 billion.
- In June, OKX announced a joint venture with Intercontinental Exchange, with Cuomo serving as co-chair.
- The venture is intended to connect ICE’s exchange and data infrastructure with OKX’s onchain and self-custody technology.
The companies are working to expand institutional access to digital assets and tokenized products. Cuomo’s appointment to the OKX board comes as the exchange continues to strengthen its connections with traditional financial institutions and market infrastructure.
OKX has also recently launched OKX AI, a marketplace designed to allow autonomous artificial intelligence agents to discover work, collaborate, transact and build reputation onchain. The initiative forms part of the company’s broader effort to develop infrastructure for digital assets and emerging technology applications.
At the end of May, OKX Ventures acquired a $53 million stake in South Korean crypto exchange Coinone, strengthening the company’s presence in Asia and supporting its broader expansion across regulated digital asset markets.
