Andrew Tate is one of the most famous, and most polarizing, men on the internet.

The 39-year-old former professional kickboxer built a fortune on a webcam business and an online moneymaking course, and a following of millions with content about masculinity and getting rich. His repeated remarks about women drew widespread criticism and, for a time, got him banned from most major social platforms.

His legal troubles run deeper than the bans. Romanian police arrested Tate and his brother Tristan in December 2022.

He spent about three months in jail there, then house arrest, and was sent to trial in 2023 on rape and human-trafficking charges.

In September 2026, Romanian prosecutors indicted him again, this time for trafficking minors, money laundering, sex with a minor and witness tampering. He has denied all wrongdoing.

Right now, Tate isn't even free. He and his brother were arrested in Miami in late July after Britain requested their extradition on separate charges, and they have been sitting in a U.S. jail while a judge weighs the request.

Which is what makes this week's news strange: his crypto wallet just moved $1.87 million.

Andrew Tate's bet

Editor's Inputs: First, a quick word on how anyone even knows this. Cryptocurrency runs on public ledgers: every transaction is recorded in the open, visible to anyone who looks. A "wallet" is simply a crypto account on that ledger. Wallets don't carry names, but researchers can often connect one to a person by following its history, and firms have made a business of watching the accounts of the rich and famous. One of the best known is Lookonchain.

On Oct. 3, Lookonchain reported that a wallet linked to Tate had transferred about $1.87 million worth of a token called HYPE to Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange. HYPE is the house token of a crypto trading platform called Hyperliquid, more on that below.

The history of that wallet is the story. It bought 122,827 HYPE for about $550,000, at an average price of $4.48, roughly two years ago. Then it mostly sat still.

"He has made a total profit of $7.24M on $HYPE, with a 1,317% return," Lookonchain noted.

The wallet still holds about 63,550 HYPE, worth $5.62 million.

Full context, moving tokens to an exchange doesn't necessarily mean they were sold, though it does make selling easier. And trackers can see money move between accounts — they can't see whose hands are on the keyboard, a detail that matters when the account's owner is in prison.

What the winning bet actually was

Hyperliquid is a trading platform where people bet on where crypto prices will go, usually with borrowed money, which multiplies both the wins and the wipeouts. Unlike a brokerage, no company sits in the middle holding customer funds — the trades run on software.

HYPE is the platform's own token. Owning it works a bit like owning chips issued by the casino itself: if the casino gets more popular, the chips get more valuable.

Hyperliquid got very popular. The token launched in late 2024 below $5 and was trading near $88.33 at press time — an 18-fold rise — valuing all HYPE in circulation at roughly $22.16 billion. The platform kept growing into the rally, expanding in October 2025 beyond crypto into markets tied to stocks, commodities and currencies.

Andrew Tate's failed career as a trader

Crypto became part of Tate's pitch of financial independence to his followers: Bitcoin, speculative tokens, leveraged trading.

In November 2025, another tracking firm, Arkham Intelligence, reported that Tate had lost his entire trading balance on the same platform.

So the same man, on the same platform, lost every dollar he actively traded, while the tokens he left alone for two years made him $7 million.
