The decision by Gen3 to step back from retail-focused development on the XRP Ledger has prompted a strong response from Anodos Finance co-founder Panos Mekras on X.
Mekras described the update from Gen3 co-founder Shen as both disappointing and concerning, while highlighting the importance of Shen’s contribution to the XRPL ecosystem.
Mekras said Shen has been “one of the most important builders and contributors in the XRPL ecosystem.” He also focused on Shen’s comments about the limited support available to teams developing innovative products on the ledger.
According to Mekras, the issue extends beyond Gen3. He argued that the ecosystem needs to address the conditions facing builders if it wants to attract and retain more developers and projects.

Mekras reiterated a concern he has raised for more than a year regarding the availability of resources for XRPL developers. He highlighted Shen’s call for organizations with the resources to support innovative projects to provide more meaningful backing to the ecosystem.
Shen had said Gen3 struggled to identify a sustainable future for retail-focused platforms on the XRPL. He also cited a lack of funding opportunities for startups that do not already generate revenue from other networks or maintain strong relationships with well-funded organizations.
Mekras agreed with that assessment and said the ecosystem needs to acknowledge the problem. His comments suggest that financial support for builders remains one of the central issues affecting development on the network.
Mekras also raised concerns about several other areas of the XRPL ecosystem. He said more talent is leaving than entering, while describing liquidity as insufficient.
He also pointed to the continued need for stronger developer tools. In his view, developers require better infrastructure and meaningful opportunities to build sustainable businesses around the XRP Ledger.
Mekras further criticized the level of support available to builders. He said the ecosystem lacks sufficient opportunities for developers and startups, while also expressing concern about the limited focus on retail and consumer applications.
For Mekras, consumer-focused applications remain important because they can help bring more users into the XRPL ecosystem. His comments indicate that infrastructure development alone does not address the need for products that ordinary users can access and use.

Mekras’ response comes as Gen3 prepares to change its role within the XRPL. While Shen said Gen3 will stop pursuing retail-focused platforms, the company will continue operating its dUNL validator and participating in the technical development of the ledger.
