For most of its history, API3 has been known to crypto for one thing: moving real-world data onto blockchains without a middleman standing in between. Its newest product aims that same machinery at a customer that barely existed a year ago — the AI agents now beginning to transact on their own — and in the process stakes a claim on what the project calls the data layer for the agentic internet.
That product isAirnodeHub, an early-access marketplace where an autonomous agent can discover an API, call it, pay for it and verify the response without a human involved at any step. It is a natural extension of the idea API3 has pushed since it entered the oracle sector: that data is most trustworthy when the source itself signs it.
Crypto readers will recognize the lineage. API3 coined the term first-party oracle to describe data providers who run their own nodes rather than routing information through third-party relayers, and it operates more than 100 such feeds across dozens of networks. The same design principle now sits under AirnodeHub. Every listing is a live endpoint that describes itself, prices itself per request, and cryptographically signs each response it returns. Because the signature is attached to the data, a call an agent made an hour ago stays verifiable the next day — and because those signatures compose, an agent chaining several sources together can carry each one along, letting whoever consumes the final result check every underlying provider.
The mechanics are built for how agents actually behave. Rather than knowing which provider to use, an agent states an intent in plain language and receives candidate calls with parameters filled in, the cost to run them, and the identity that will sign the answer. Agents speaking the Model Context Protocol can plug into the marketplace directly and treat the whole catalogue as callable tools. Payment runs on x402, an open standard for settling per request over HTTP, so an agent pays for exactly what it uses with a wallet instead of an account or API key. At launch the catalogue spans roughly three dozen listings across market data, web and news search, weather, aviation, health, sports and more, each flagged according to whether the original producer operates it directly.
The move also fits a broader pattern in howAPI3 has tried to reshape oracle economics. Its Oracle Extractable Value mechanism already reworks a long-standing leak in DeFi: when an oracle updates a price, the liquidations and arbitrage that follow are normally captured by outside bots, draining value from the protocol using the feed. API3 auctions off the right to that value and returns the proceeds to the applications that generated it, with early adopters including well-known lending markets. The throughline from OEV to AirnodeHub is consistent — return value to the parties that create it, and make data provable back to its source, whether that source is feeding a lending protocol or an autonomous agent.
None of this is presented as finished. AirnodeHub is in early access; listings are free to call for now, and API3 currently builds and hosts the integrations itself while it works toward letting providers run their own nodes and sign their own responses directly. The API3 DAO, which governs the project, recently approved a funding cycle that includes support for the marketplace alongside its ongoing oracle work.
The bet underneath it all is that provenance will become a base requirement of the agent economy rather than an afterthought — and that the way to deliver it is to pay and empower the data’s source rather than an intermediary. Whether AirnodeHub becomes that standard remains to be proven, but the architecture is now live and testable. About API3
API3 is a decentralized oracle project that connects real-world data directly to blockchains and, increasingly, to AI agents through first-party, cryptographically signed data. It pioneered the first-party oracle model — in which data providers operate their own oracle nodes rather than relying on third-party intermediaries — and maintains more than 100 data feeds across dozens of networks. Through its Oracle Extractable Value (OEV) mechanism, API3 returns value generated by oracle updates to the applications that create it. Its latest initiative, AirnodeHub, extends the same source-signed data model to the emerging agent economy. API3 is governed by the API3 DAO. Learn more at api3.org and airnodehub.api3.org.
