Aptos (@Aptos) has burned close to 2 million $APT since its mainnet launch, with the pace of burning picking up after a tenfold increase in network gas fees. The network burned another 170,100 APT over the past 30 days, and its annualized burn rate currently stands at around 2 million APT. Average transaction fees remain at about $0.0005.

The figures show fee-driven burning is gaining pace. They also show it is still small next to the new APT issued through staking rewards.

How the APT Burn Works

On Aptos, every transaction fee is burned. A governance proposal raised gas fees on the network tenfold, which increased the amount of APT burned with each transaction.Aptos increased gas costs and storage fees 10-fold on March 19 through governance proposal No. 185.

The burn is not applied uniformly to every charge. Execution and I/O gas is permanently burned, while storage fees may be refunded when storage is deleted, with the refunded amount minted again. Not every fee payment therefore results in a permanent reduction in supply.

Despite the higher fees, costs for users remain low. The average gas fee sits at around $0.0005, which keeps sending stablecoins on Aptos close to free for ordinary users.

The change was part of a wider tokenomics overhaul. The Aptos Foundation's reforms include a 2.1 billion APT maximum supply, lower staking rewards, and higher transaction fees designed to increase token burning. The proposal lowered the annual staking-reward rate from 5.19% to 2.6%.

Burns Still Trail New Issuance

Burning has not yet outpaced issuance. As of October 9, 2026, monthly staking emissions stood at roughly 1.5 million APT, compared with 171,080 APT burned over the previous 30 days.Aptos burned 174,195 tokens over the latest 30-day period, but monthly staking rewards of about 1.5 million APT leave the network adding roughly 1.4 million tokens to supply.

Reported 30-day figures differ slightly by data source and date. Aptos' own figure is 174,100 APT, while other trackers cite numbers in the same range.

For the network to become deflationary, token burns must consistently exceed newly issued APT, rather than merely increasing alongside transaction volumes. Crypto Briefing noted that Aptos needs volume, not pricier transactions, to move the needle, since pushing fees much higher risks undercutting the network's cheap-transfer appeal.

The Aptos Foundation has also pointed to Decibel, a decentralized exchange built on the network, as a potential source of additional burns. The platform anticipates an estimated annual burn of over 32 million APT following the launch of Decibel DEX. That is a projection rather than a realised figure.
