@AptosLabs has officially announced MonoMove, what it describes as the most significant upgrade in the history of the Aptos blockchain's execution engine. MonoMove is the largest proposed upgrade in the history of the Aptos blockchain execution engine, and internal testing using real mainnet transaction replays demonstrates that the new engine executes smart contracts up to 55 times faster than the current production system.
What MonoMove Changes
MonoMove is a complete redesign of the Move virtual machine and the execution stack around it. Rather than tuning the existing system, the redesign targets both better single-thread performance, meaning how fast one processor core gets through a job, and parallelism, meaning how many jobs can run side by side without stepping on each other. Under the hood, MonoMove uses monomorphized micro-ops and a register-based interpreter. Monomorphization means generating specialized versions of code ahead of time, so the engine avoids figuring out data types on the fly while a transaction runs. A register-based interpreter works with values held in named slots instead of constantly pushing and popping them from a stack. Both approaches aim to cut wasted work from every instruction.
Benchmark Results and the Road to Mainnet
Benchmarks were run using real transaction data from @DecibelTrade, an on-chain perpetuals exchange built on Aptos. Decibel is a perpetual derivatives decentralized exchange incubated by Aptos Labs.Performance benchmarks on Decibel showed collateral withdrawal speeds improved by up to 55x, order placement by up to 22x, and end-to-end sequential throughput by up to 11x, with tests simulating complex DeFi operations including order books, liquidity pools, lending markets, oracle updates, and payment flows. Perpetual contract requests saw a 38x improvement according to the original announcement.
Aptos Labs said its existing engine is already among the fastest of any production-grade blockchain, making the MonoMove gains all the more notable. That said, the upgrade is not yet live. MonoMove is expected to reach feature completion by the end of 2026, with a mainnet launch targeted for 2027 pending governance approval.Aptos Labs identified remaining performance bottlenecks primarily between the execution and storage layers.
