While the leading cryptocurrency Bitcoin continues to move within a narrow range, the Coinbase Bitcoin premium index, which tracks US investor demand for Bitcoin, has been in negative territory for 80 consecutive days.
Historical data shows that the previous longest negative period in Coinbase’s Bitcoin premium was between January 16 and February 24 of this year, lasting 40 days.
What Does This Mean for Bitcoin?
Data indicating the longest negative streak in history suggests weak US-based buying pressure and weak institutional demand for BTC.
The Coinbase Premium Index tracks the difference between the Bitcoin price on Coinbase, based in the US, and Binance, and is considered a key indicator providing insight into US investor demand for BTC.
While the index remaining in negative territory for 80 days doesn’t necessarily mean global demand for Bitcoin has completely disappeared, it does indicate that US investors’ appetite for buying spot Bitcoin has weakened compared to previous periods.
Weakening demand from US investors also means that a key source of liquidity supporting Bitcoin’s gains is weakening. Therefore, a return to positive territory for the index can be considered a significant signal that US investors’ appetite for buying is strengthening, and could create a positive catalyst for BTC.
On the other hand, it is not possible to draw a definitive conclusion about the direction of the Bitcoin price based solely on the Coinbase Premium Index. This is because global investor interest, ETF inflows, the futures market, macroeconomic developments, and on-chain data continue to be decisive factors in determining the direction of the BTC price.
