In a dramatic international effort, Poland’s Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime, alongside the FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security, arrested four individuals in connection with a major SIM swap scheme. These individuals are accused of targeting cryptocurrency exchange accounts to siphon off digital funds, subsequently laundering those through various bank accounts and digital wallets.
Operation Details and Impact
The operation, coming to light on June 25, revealed that the suspects functioned as a well-organized unit, reportedly moving illicit funds worth millions of zlotys. Authorities estimate over tens of millions of zlotys were laundered, equating to approximately $15 million. In a statement, Polish officials confirmed the arrests related to the SIM swap attacks and stressed the investigation is still active.
How Did They Penetrate?
The suspects infiltrated telecommunications service providers’ IT frameworks, utilizing social engineering tactics and bespoke software to intrude into employee emails. This access allowed them to duplicate phone numbers, redirecting them under their control to facilitate further unlawful activities.
Once they commandeered victims’ SMS and email accounts, the criminals gained access to crypto exchange profiles, quickly depleting the balances. The stolen digital currencies were routed through a sophisticated web of Polish and international bank accounts, payment platforms, and a multitude of digital wallets linked to diversified currencies.
Polish authorities confirmed that four individuals were detained in connection with SIM swap attacks aimed at cryptocurrency exchange accounts, and emphasized the investigation remains ongoing.
Blockchain expert ZachXBT pointed out a connection involving one suspect and Wojtek Kulisz, an expert in social engineering branded as “Merry” online. Despite the authorities withholding the individuals’ identities, ZachXBT noted that apparel and accessories from a public Instagram matched items spotted in the operation’s seized artifacts.
- The potential charges include criminal organization involvement, unauthorized IT system breaches, and money laundering.
- If found guilty, the suspects face up to 25 years of imprisonment.
- The operation underscores international cooperation evidenced by recent joint endeavors in combating cryptocurrency-related crimes.
This operation is a pivotal moment underscoring global collaborative efforts to tackle illicit activities involving cryptocurrencies. It joins the ranks of other significant busts, including the FBI’s previous successes targeting cryptocurrency scams and recoveries of vast bitcoin reserves, emphasizing the relentless pursuit of justice in the digital asset domain.
