Avalanche (@avax) has rolled out one of the most significant performance upgrades in its history. Since the Helicon upgrade activated on mainnet on September 22, the network's C-Chain now verifies blocks in roughly 2 milliseconds, down from approximately 210 milliseconds before the release. That is a roughly 100-fold improvement in block verification speed.

What Continuous Execution Actually Does

The speed gain comes from a mechanism called Continuous Execution, introduced under community proposal ACP-194. Before Helicon, consensus had to wait for execution to finish before the next block could be accepted, and that serial dependency was the bottleneck. ACP-194 breaks that dependency: consensus now accepts blocks into a queue continuously, while a separate executor drains the queue in parallel. The result is that the two processes no longer block each other, freeing up significant throughput headroom.

Post-launch data shows per-block capacity has roughly doubled, giving the C-Chain 2x more headroom per block. There is one practical nuance for developers to note: a transaction's effects finalize a beat after its block is accepted, not at the instant of acceptance, with settlement following roughly five seconds later.

Staking Rules Get a Significant Overhaul

Helicon also rewrites validator economics. The minimum validation period drops from 336 hours (two weeks) to 48 hours, a change aimed at resolving a direct conflict with institutional redemption requirements without weakening network security guarantees.

Alongside the shorter minimum, ACP-236 introduces auto-renewed staking, so operators can set custom cycle lengths and automatically compound rewards.Without auto-renewal, a 48-hour minimum would force continuous node operators to manually submit new staking transactions every two days. Auto-renewal eliminates that friction, giving operators more flexibility over locked capital.

The looser entry conditions come paired with a tighter performance requirement. The uptime requirement for validator rewards rises from 80% to 90% for new staking periods. Helicon also introduces a dynamic minimum gas price, replacing the network's previously fixed fee floor with a stake-weighted median set by validators.

The upgrade went live on the Avalanche Mainnet on September 22, 2026, at 11 AM ET, delivered through AvalancheGo v1.15.0.Helicon first hit the Fuji Testnet on July 28, giving developers and validators nearly two months to stress-test the changes before mainnet deployment.
