Kenya Puts 30 Million Academic Records on Avalanche
Kenya has launched a blockchain-based system for verifying academic credentials through the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), placing more than 30 million records on the Avalanche ($AVAX) network in an effort to combat certificate fraud and make credentials easier to verify. The move marks one of the most significant public-sector deployments of blockchain technology on the African continent.
KNEC anchored over 15 million academic records dating back to 1989 onto the Avalanche C-Chain, developed alongside local technology partner LegitDoc. The initiative shifts academic verification from months-long paper checks to sub-second cryptographic lookups.KNEC projects that the total volume of protected records will grow to approximately 35 million as the rollout continues, with the infrastructure set to handle millions of newly issued digital certificates each year as students complete their national examinations.
Replacing Paper With Tamper-Proof Cryptographic Proofs
The Avalanche rollout covers primary education results, secondary examination records, advanced tertiary diplomas, and national teaching certifications, including the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) Grade 8 results and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Grade 12 records, which include the entire 2025 graduating class of nearly one million students.
The platform allows students and graduates to access digital certificates while giving employers, universities, and government organisations tools to verify credentials, with support for both individual and bulk verification.Employers and universities can now confirm records within seconds instead of waiting months.
Kenya's Public Service Commission has previously raised concerns about weaknesses in existing verification processes and has worked with KNEC and other institutions to improve the authentication of academic qualifications. The initiative aligns with Kenya's policy shift toward digital credentials and represents one of Avalanche's largest public-sector deployments.
