Helicon Goes Live on Avalanche Mainnet

@avax activated its Helicon network upgrade on September 22, marking what the project describes as its most significant overhaul of staking economics since launch. The upgrade went live on mainnet at 11:00 AM ET, rolling six community proposals into a single AvalancheGo v1.15.0 release and touching everything from how validators earn rewards to how the C-Chain processes transactions.

The minimum validator lock-up period drops from 336 hours (14 days) to just 48 hours. Alongside that, validators previously had to manually re-stake their $AVAX once a staking period expired. Auto-renewal eliminates that overhead, with stakes now rolling over unless a validator explicitly opts out.

The upgrade also tightens the conditions for earning rewards. The uptime threshold at which a validator earns rewards rises from 80% to 90%.Based on a query of the P-Chain ahead of activation, 37 of 593 active validators sat below that new bar.

C-Chain Gets Parallel Execution and a Dynamic Gas Floor

The upgrade introduces what Avalanche calls Continuous Execution, which decouples the consensus pathway from transaction execution. Previously, the network had to reach agreement on a block and process the transactions inside it in a tightly coupled sequence. Continuous Execution separates those two jobs so they can run in parallel, opening new paths for scalability.

The upgrade also makes the minimum C-Chain gas price dynamic. This means the gas floor is now set by validator consensus rather than a hardcoded figure, giving the network more flexibility to respond to demand conditions.

On the rewards side, the overall $AVAX staking reward rate will ease gradually rather than shift abruptly. ACP-285, the proposal that reduces the minimum consumption rate, phases in gradually post-activation rather than flipping all at once. The projected net effect of all the changes is a reduction in AVAX inflation of 0.5 to 1 percentage point. One-year stakes remain on existing terms during the transition.

Helicon bundles six Avalanche Community Proposals into the most significant single upgrade to Avalanche's staking economics since genesis. For validators and delegators alike, the practical takeaway is clear: shorter lock-ups offer more flexibility, but the higher uptime requirement means choosing operators carefully now carries more weight.
