Key takeaways

  • Barclays plans 5,000 job cuts despite rising profits
  • Support functions account for 60% of planned reductions
  • AI and automation support broader banking efficiency measures

Barclays plans to eliminate approximately 5,000 jobs in 2026, even after reporting a 12% increase in quarterly profit, making the British lender one of the clearest examples of how automation is reshaping employment across the banking industry.

The bank reported £2.3 billion in third-quarter profit before tax, while revenue increased 3% to £7.4 billion. Nevertheless, executives confirmed that approximately 5% of its workforce will be affected by restructuring, with technology and support roles facing substantial reductions.

According to Reuters, roughly 1,000 positions have already been eliminated, with another 4,000 expected to disappear before the end of the year.

Barclays Targets 5,000 Jobs as AI Reshapes Banking Operations

Chief Financial Officer Anna Cross said approximately 60% of the planned reductions would affect support functions, including software developers.

That implies around 3,000 positions across support operations, although Barclays has not disclosed how many individual developers will lose their jobs.

The reductions form part of a broader restructuring strategy intended to simplify operations and make greater use of technology.

In its official quarterly results, Barclays disclosed £201 million in structural cost actions during the third quarter, compared with £93 million a year earlier.

Management expects another £300 million in restructuring-related actions during the final quarter and anticipates efficiency measures will deliver approximately £1.1 billion in additional savings during 2027.

The announcement follows growing concerns about AI-related layoffs, as companies increasingly evaluate which administrative, analytical and software tasks can be automated.

However, Barclays has not attributed every job reduction directly to artificial intelligence. Its restructuring also reflects investments in modernizing systems and simplifying existing processes.

Barclays Profit Climbs 12% Despite Weaker Bond Trading

Barclays' financial results reveal why management continues cutting costs despite improving overall profitability.

Third-quarter profit before tax rose to £2.3 billion, while earnings per share increased 18% and the cost-to-income ratio improved to 62% from 63%.

However, fixed-income, currencies and commodities trading revenue declined 19% year over year, offsetting some of the strength elsewhere in the investment bank.

Equities trading performed considerably better, with revenue increasing 47% following earlier investments in financing and derivatives.

The contrasting results help explain why investors remain cautious about bank earnings, even when headline profits improve.

Coinpaper previously examined Barclays shares during an earlier period of market volatility, when analyst optimism failed to prevent selling pressure.

Similar concerns have appeared across European banking markets. An earlier Deutsche Bank and UniCredit selloff demonstrated how higher bond yields can pressure financial stocks even when lending operations remain profitable.

The issue has also affected American lenders, where strong bank earnings have not always translated into stronger share prices.

AI Job Cuts Raise Questions About Banking's Future Workforce

Barclays' restructuring reflects a broader shift in how major financial institutions are allocating resources.

Banks are investing in automated customer support, software development tools and more efficient internal systems while attempting to reduce recurring employment costs.

The trend contrasts with the massive investment flowing into AI infrastructure, including Nvidia's latest factory technology, designed to accelerate deployment of large-scale computing systems.

Barclays expects total group costs of approximately £18.5 billion in 2026 and £18.4 billion in 2027, despite continued investment in technology.
