- Regulatory uncertainty remains a major consideration for institutional adoption, as crypto investors increasingly incorporate traditional financial instruments into hybrid portfolios.
Traditional hedge funds are exploring cryptocurrency trading platforms as opportunities, as conventional financial assets attract greater institutional interest. According to Binance executive Catherine Chen, these firms are increasingly examining arbitrage opportunities, deeper liquidity, and uninterrupted market access.
Speaking during an interview at Token2049, Chen explained that hedge funds are moving beyond general inquiries toward more active engagement. The Binance head of VIP and institutional identified cash equities and perpetual futures as products attracting traditional market participants.
These instruments allow institutions to explore price differences across financial markets while accessing trading services outside conventional market hours. Chen highlighted weekend price discovery as another advantage, particularly for firms seeking trading opportunities when traditional exchanges remain closed.
Institutional interest also reflects improvements in liquidity across major cryptocurrency platforms, supporting larger transactions and more complex trading strategies. Previously, limited liquidity on smaller exchanges and decentralized finance platforms made similar opportunities less practical for established hedge funds.
Despite increasing inquiries, Chen emphasized that institutional participation remains at an early stage, with substantial capital inflows unlikely to emerge immediately. She identified the next 12 to 18 months as an important period for observing whether interest translates into trading activity.

Binance Reports Significant Growth in Traditional Finance Trading Volumes
Binance has recorded substantial growth in trading activity involving traditional financial instruments, reflecting increasing interest in products connecting cryptocurrency and conventional markets.
According to Chen, cash equity assets under management increased from approximately $800 million to $900 million to around $1.4 billion. Meanwhile, monthly trading volumes for traditional finance perpetual futures have expanded considerably since their introduction earlier this year.
These contracts initially generated approximately $20 billion to $30 billion in monthly trading volume, according to the Binance executive. That figure has increased to roughly $400 billion over a 30-day period, demonstrating greater activity in these products.
Beyond traditional hedge funds, cryptocurrency investors are also expanding their exposure to financial instruments linked to conventional markets. Chen explained that crypto native clients are incorporating traditional finance products into portfolios combining different asset classes.
This development reflects growing participation from both markets, even as their investment approaches remain different. Traditional institutions are examining cryptocurrency trading infrastructure, while existing digital asset investors are exploring additional financial products.
Regulatory Clarity Remains Key to Institutional Crypto Adoption
Despite rising trading volumes, Chen acknowledged that activity remains relatively modest compared with established traditional financial markets and their overall size.
Regulatory uncertainty also remains an important consideration for institutions evaluating tokenized assets and trading arrangements involving multiple financial markets. Chen noted that the industry lacks a common framework governing how these products should operate across different trading environments.
Additionally, clearer regulatory standards could help determine how traditional finance and cryptocurrency markets develop closer trading relationships. Binance’s expanding traditional finance trading volumes reflect growing activity across both markets, while broader institutional adoption remains dependent on liquidity and regulation.
