In the aftermath of a massive $6.3 billion security breach on October 29, Binance is actively taking measures to mitigate the damage and restore the affected assets. Amidst these efforts, a public spat erupted between Binance’s founder, Changpeng Zhao, and Elon Musk. The crypto giant confirmed that approximately $3 billion in affected assets have been frozen to prevent further loss, reiterating its commitment to safeguarding user funds.

Contentious Exchange on X Platform Escalates

The discord between Zhao and Musk began when Zhao took to the X platform to advise users against opening suspicious email links and attachments. Musk responded with emojis of fire and laughter, later adding the phrase “Every day is zeroday” in relation to the incident.

The term “zero day” refers to undetected or unpatched security vulnerabilities that attackers can exploit before developers are aware of them. Such vulnerabilities are among the riskiest in cybersecurity as they allow unauthorized access before any defensive measures can be implemented.

Changpeng Zhao addressed Musk, expressing his respect but urging an end to sarcastic remarks, calling them inappropriate during these challenging times.

Zhao further explained that the breach appeared more complex than it initially seemed, emphasizing that compromised devices or algorithms often play a significant role in such security incidents.

Financial Stability and SpaceX Holdings Come to the Fore

In defense of Binance’s financial resilience, Zhao highlighted the company’s $500 million contribution to Musk’s Twitter acquisition in 2022, resulting in a stake in SpaceX. He revealed that the value of these shares has since surpassed $1 billion but did not announce any plans to liquidate these assets.

Preliminary assessments shared by Zhao indicated that the $6.3 billion impact, mitigated by the frozen $3 billion assets and over $1 billion in SAFU reserves, leaves a gap of approximately $2 billion. Zhao noted that while this amount is manageable, it poses a substantial financial strain.

Binance’s Co-CEO Yi He assured that the company’s annual revenue suffices to cover the loss, negating any immediate need to sell SpaceX shares.

In an update dated October 30, Binance allocated around $6.34 billion from company resources to address the incident. The firm reported possession of about $5 billion in affected crypto assets, securing the remaining $1.34 billion through market transactions and over-the-counter channels.

Investigation Progresses with Coinbase Assistance

Initial investigations suggest that the attack may have originated from the compromised laptop of a DevOps engineer. Binance noted no evidence of leaked wallet private keys. According to TRM Labs, approximately $6.36 billion in assets moved from Binance wallets across multiple blockchain networks, with most transfers occurring within 20 minutes. TRM Labs and Chainalysis linked the attack to North Korea-affiliated TraderTraitor group, though Binance has yet to verify the attackers’ identity.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced efforts to block transactions to wallets affiliated with the breach, confirming direct communication with Binance. Tether and Circle also supported freezing some assets linked to the attack.

Binance paused deposits and withdrawals initially as part of its security review. In a subsequent service update, the firm stated that deposits have resumed, whereas withdrawals remain suspended pending a security overhaul. The company expects to restart withdrawals within 48 hours of the October 30 update.
