Binance Enters the Currency Market with Its First FX Perp
@binance is stepping into foreign exchange territory. The exchange announced on September 18 that it will launch its first FX perpetual futures contract, USDBRLUSDT, tracking the US dollar against the Brazilian real. The contract goes live on September 21, 2026 at 14:00 UTC. It settles in $USDT, trades around the clock, and offers up to 100x leverage.
The product sits within Binance's growing TradFi Perpetual category. These contracts carry no expiry dates and require no rollovers, with traders able to express views on FX, commodities, and equities using $USDT as a single settlement currency. That simplicity is part of the appeal: rather than managing multiple currency exposures to fund a position, traders can operate entirely within the stablecoin ecosystem.
How Pricing Works When Traditional FX Goes Dark
One of the structural challenges with FX perpetuals is what happens when conventional currency markets shut for the weekend. Binance has addressed this with a dual-mode pricing framework. During regular FX trading hours, Sunday 17:00 ET to Friday 17:00 ET, the price index is updated every second as a weighted average from third-party data vendors.Over weekends and public holidays, the system switches to an exponentially weighted moving average of order book prices, rather than relying on external price feeds.
The timing is notable. The launch comes less than two weeks after Bybit introduced 24/7 perpetuals tracking EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY, also settled in $USDT and offering up to 100x leverage.Kraken had entered the space earlier, launching FX perpetuals in April 2025 across the euro, British pound, Australian dollar, Japanese yen, and Swiss franc, with up to 50x leverage.
Binance's existing TradFi perps, which cover gold and stock indices, have built a track record over the weekend. The exchange says its TradFi-linked perps have already become primary venues for weekend price discovery, leading peer venues by 2.6 to 3.8 times.Average daily trading volume on these products grew from roughly $3 billion in January 2026 to $8.6 billion by March, with cumulative volume surpassing $153 billion.
