Binance boosted its XRP reserves by around 280 million tokens within a 48-hour period, effectively reversing much of the decline that followed the company’s $6.34 billion security breach on October 29. This rapid increase comes as the exchange continues to recover and reinforce its reserves after a major theft affected multiple blockchain networks.

Reserve Recovery After Security Incident

CryptoQuant analyst Amr Taha reported that Binance’s XRP holdings grew from 2.35 billion on November 3 to 2.63 billion by November 5. This represents an 11.9% rise in XRP reserves, suggesting significant activity in the aftermath of the platform’s security event.

The breach, which involved the theft of 233.46 million XRP from five Binance hot wallets, prompted questions about whether the rebound in reserves was due to new deposits, internal movements, or reserve replenishment by Binance itself.

CryptoQuant’s latest data indicate that netflows from large XRP transfers went through a dramatic turnaround after the breach. On October 29, Binance registered approximately 226 million XRP in net outflows from large transfers. However, by November 4, the netflows reversed direction, climbing to about 273 million XRP in inflows.

In a November 3 security update, Binance confirmed that the breach had affected roughly $6.34 billion in assets, but noted that it had managed to replenish 98% of the tokens impacted. The firm also stated that $2.85 billion had been frozen or intercepted during its recovery efforts.

Binance confirmed that full reported reserve backing for XRP has been restored and highlighted that 98% of affected token assets had been replaced as part of its recovery plan.

Despite these efforts, CryptoQuant has not verified whether the additional 280 million XRP originated from customer activity, new deposits, or internal transfers. Observers are therefore cautious about attributing the reserve growth to any one source.

Transaction Patterns and Liquidity Signals

Further analysis reveals a rise in Binance’s share of XRP deposit transactions. Data show that this figure increased from 44.3% on October 27 to 56.2% on November 5. At the same time, the share of reported withdrawal transactions decreased from 55.7% to 43.7% over the same period. However, as these numbers reflect transaction counts rather than total amounts, they do not provide a complete picture of the net value of customer deposits.

Additionally, a contributor to CryptoQuant reported that Binance’s XRP Scarcity Index rose to nearly 2.1, the highest level observed since 2022. This index tracks tradable liquidity on the exchange and can diverge from total on-exchange reserves, meaning that Binance might hold substantial XRP while immediate trading liquidity remains limited.

Another analyst explained that the Scarcity Index’s rise highlights how an exchange can report large reserves even as available liquidity for trading stays comparatively tight, especially after significant net withdrawals.

This issue became more prominent as Binance experienced approximately $4.72 billion in net withdrawals after reopening services. Current reserve growth, therefore, does not directly signal a surge in selling pressure or bearish sentiment.

Analysts emphasize that increased exchange balances can arise not only from new customer deposits, but also internal accounting moves or efforts to restore previous reserve levels.

Meanwhile, blockchain investigators continue to monitor the movement of stolen XRP. Coinpaper documented two notable transfers, totaling nearly $101 million, indicating that a portion of the stolen tokens remains in circulation despite customer balances being restored.

The distinction between exchange reserve coverage and complete financial recovery remains under scrutiny. Proof-of-reserves reports can verify asset existence but do not always reflect the full financial status of an exchange, according to previous Coinpaper analyses.

With large netflows and ongoing uncertainty over the source of reserve replenishment, close monitoring of real-time exchange balances and on-chain activity remains crucial. For users and investors tracking such rapid reserve movements, CryptoAppsy’s real-time charts and coin-specific alerts enable live monitoring of exchange portfolio changes, offering timely updates as Binance and other platforms respond to incidents and restore digital assets.
