Ray Dalio says a U.S. debt crisis could emerge within five years, urging investors to favor gold and Bitcoin(BTC) over bonds.
Key Points:
- Dalio estimates a U.S. debt crisis could arrive in about three years, with a range of one to five years if policy does not change.
- He says federal spending is running about 40% above revenue, while annual principal and interest payments total roughly $11 trillion this year.
- Dalio favors underweighting bonds, holding 10%-15% in gold and keeping a smaller allocation to Bitcoin.
Ray Dalio Warning
Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, published the warning Aug. 21 after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said long-term bond buybacks could exceed $4 billion per operation. Dalio treated the move as another sign of pressure in the U.S. debt market, rather than a lasting solution for rising borrowing costs.
He estimated federal revenue at about $5.5 trillion this year against roughly $7.5 trillion in expenses, leaving spending around 40% above income. With about $10 trillion in principal coming due and roughly $1 trillion in interest, Dalio put annual debt-service needs near $11 trillion, about twice government revenue.
“I am confident that the government’s financial condition is at an inflection point,” Dalio wrote. He said debt could otherwise reach levels that become difficult to manage without severe economic disruption.

Bitcoin Hedge Case
Dalio proposed cutting the budget deficit to 3% of GDP through three measures used together: lower spending, higher tax revenue and lower interest rates. “All three need to happen concurrently,” he wrote, arguing that relying too heavily on any single measure could make the adjustment more disruptive.
For investors, Dalio recommended being underweight debt assets such as bonds while overweighting gold and holding a smaller Bitcoin position. He suggested 10%-15% of a portfolio in gold, saying that allocation could reduce risk and potentially improve returns.
His timing remains explicitly uncertain. “My guess ... is that it will come in three years, give or take two,” Dalio wrote, while noting that policy changes, wars or other shocks could move the timetable.
The warning extends Dalio’s broader debt-cycle argument that rising interest costs can crowd out spending, weaken demand for government bonds and eventually push central banks toward money creation. In that framework, scarce non-government assets such as gold and Bitcoin can become more attractive when confidence in government debt and currency declines.
