Bitcoin and gold are increasingly moving in the same direction as investors turn toward scarce assets amid concerns over the long-term value of fiat currencies. The trend has become more visible in recent weeks, with Bitcoin’s correlation with gold reaching historically high levels.

Bitcoin Moves Closer to Gold

Bitcoin’s 90-day Pearson correlation with gold recently reached an all-time high, while the 30-day reading climbed to around 0.8, its highest level of the year. The figure shows that price movements in the two assets have become increasingly similar.

The development stands out because Bitcoin has often followed broader risk sentiment throughout 2026. Earlier in the year, BTC frequently declined when equities came under pressure, while gains in the stock market did not always translate into similar strength for Bitcoin.

Gold has provided a different reference point. Both assets have recently gained at the same time, reinforcing the view that some investors are treating Bitcoin as a scarce asset alongside traditional stores of value.

Debasement Puts Scarcity Back in Focus

The move comes as concerns over currency debasement receive greater attention across financial markets. Investors worried about declining purchasing power are looking for assets with limited supply that are less directly tied to the expansion of fiat currencies.

Gold has traditionally filled that role, while Bitcoin has increasingly entered the discussion because its supply is capped. This has made scarcity an increasingly important theme behind demand for both assets.

ETF flows offer another indication of investor interest. Bitcoin ETFs recorded nearly $1 billion in inflows during the previous week, while gold ETFs have also remained among the stronger products for attracting capital.

Past Cycles Offer a Clue

The current setup also resembles periods that preceded major Bitcoin rallies. BTC-gold correlation rose significantly during the fourth quarter of 2020 and again in the fourth quarter of 2022.

After the 2020 episode, Bitcoin gained around 172% once the correlation peaked and began to decline. Following the late-2022 increase, BTC rallied nearly 350% over the next 14 months.

That pattern is not a guarantee that Bitcoin will repeat those gains. However, investors may pay close attention if the correlation starts falling while Bitcoin continues to strengthen.

Market sentiment has also improved considerably. The Fear and Greed Index recently reached 68, entering the greed zone after dropping as low as 5 earlier this year.

For now, Bitcoin and gold are benefiting from the same broader interest in scarce assets. Whether that demand can develop into a sustained Bitcoin uptrend will depend on liquidity, institutional flows, investor sentiment and the wider macroeconomic environment.
