Bitcoin has surged past the $80,000 mark, supported by reduced political uncertainty in the U.S. following midterm elections and a sharp fall in oil prices. As per CryptoAppsy data, the cryptocurrency is trading at $80,356. Meanwhile, the entry of $74.6 million into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs on November 4 underscores growing market interest.

Oil Price Plunge Fuels Bitcoin Rally

Anticipations of an end to the Iran conflict sparked a sell-off in energy prices. On November 4, with speculation that a Democrat-controlled Congress might limit military engagements with Iran, WTI crude futures dropped 8.29% to $88.12, while Brent slid 8.67% to $94.62. This drop in energy costs alleviated inflationary pressures, providing a lift to risk assets.

U.S. stock indices saw significant gains, with the Dow Jones climbing 3.03%, the S&P 500 advancing 1.58%, and the Nasdaq Composite up 1.44%. However, these gains don’t signify a shift in Fed policy. CME FedWatch indicates an 83% probability of a rate hike in December.

On the ETF front, Fidelity’s FBTC fund attracted the most inflows at $237 million, whereas Ark Invest and 21Shares’ ARKB fund drew in $19.9 million. Conversely, BlackRock’s IBIT fund saw an outflow of $201 million, balancing overall demand. Consequently, spot Bitcoin ETFs now hold assets worth $102.26 billion.

Bipartisan Support for Bitcoin Amid Regulatory Concerns

Despite the price rebound, there is trepidation that Democratic control might slow down crypto regulation. Although they supported the GENIUS Act last year, concerns about conflicts of interest in Trump-related crypto projects persist. Discussions around the CLARITY Act continue, highlighting ethical considerations regarding the commercial activities of public officials.

Kim Min-seung, the head of research at DigitalX, noted, “The Democratic victory has been partially priced in, and funds are returning to the market with limited shock to Bitcoin.” Yet, he cautioned that institutionalization in the digital asset sector might be delayed.

Michael Saylor Highlights Cross-Party Support

Michael Saylor, Strategy’s Chairman, emphasized the non-partisan nature of Bitcoin reserve policy. He pointed to support from both sides, noting Republican Byron Donalds and Democrat James Talarico’s endorsements of federal and state-level reserve legislation respectively. In 2022, Donalds proposed legislation to secure Trump’s Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, while Talarico’s initiative in Texas successfully passed last May.

Focus on Bitcoin’s Technical Developments

Bitcoin’s technical pathway involves addressing vulnerabilities via BIP-54, known as the “Great Consensus Cleanup.” Co-authored by Matt Corallo, the proposal aims for the next soft fork, with an 80% probability. It focuses on strengthening rule compliance without introducing new features, tackling issues like faulty block delays and timestamp manipulation.

“While these issues aren’t an immediate crisis, they pose genuine risks to the network,” Corallo remarked, adding that a timeline for the update is yet to be finalized. The earliest implementation could be September 2027, with broader expectations setting it later. Paul Sztorc, co-founder of LayerTwo Labs, critiqued its lack of new functionalities but acknowledged its role in shaping future upgrade procedures.

Bitcoin’s resurgence is tied to diminished election uncertainty, falling oil prices, and net inflows into ETFs. However, with looming rate hikes in December, interpreting these movements as Fed-driven relief remains premature. Bipartisan support for reserves doesn’t necessarily ensure rapid crypto regulatory advancements through Congress.
