In a buoyant session following the U.S. midterm elections, Bitcoin surged past the $80,000 mark, rallying with renewed vigor alongside other risk assets. The electoral outcome, marked by a commanding performance from the Democrats, catalyzed a robust rebound in equities and cryptocurrencies on Wall Street’s opening.
Markets Recover Swiftly Post-Elections
Bitcoin saw its price soar to over $80,500 during early trading hours, signaling a more than 4% gain in the BTC/USD pair, rebounding from seven-week lows. Simultaneously, U.S. stock futures exhibited significant upward movement, reflecting an invigorated appetite for risk.
The S&P 500 futures, which had plunged to 7,490 points overnight—marking their lowest since July 31—rebounded to 7,690 points, nearing their monthly highs once more.
“The initial softening in stocks appeared as a classic bear trap, occurring amid one of the most significant political shifts in recent years,” noted The Kobeissi Letter, an independent research publication known for its market insights.
The Kobeissi Letter highlighted the significant gains for Democrats, who secured seven seats in the Senate and 25 in the House of Representatives.
CoinShares Highlights Reduced Uncertainty
CoinShares, a prominent cryptocurrency asset management firm, observed that reduced electoral uncertainty might pave the way for a more sustained Bitcoin rally. However, James Butterfill, head of research, stressed that real yields, dollar liquidity, and exchange-traded product flows continue to exert a dominant influence on the market.
“For Bitcoin, the real weight lies not in the election outcomes but in real yields, dollar liquidity, and ETP flows,” emphasized James Butterfill.
Exchange-traded products (ETP) offer investors exposure to price movements without direct asset ownership, serving as a broad category of investment instruments.
Oil Prices Plunge Sharply
The energy sector saw significant movement as well, as messages from Iran lowered the perceived risk of conflict. This sentiment pushed West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil prices to a three-week low.
WTI crude fell below $93 per barrel, culminating in a weekly loss of 11.9%. Additionally, Brent crude approached $100 for the first time since October 7, mirroring the downward trend.
Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf remarked that voters had rejected war, a stance they supported. Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged that the Iran conflict partially contributed to the Republicans’ electoral setbacks. Economist Robin Brooks argued that geopolitical risk had been excessively priced into oil markets before the midterms.
