Draper: Bitcoin Adoption Could Trigger a Financial System Reset
Billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper says $BTC could eventually go "infinite" against the US dollar, a prediction rooted not in a specific price target but in the possibility that the dollar itself loses relevance as Bitcoin adoption accelerates.
Draper outlined a clear progression: businesses first say "We accept Bitcoin," then "We only accept Bitcoin," before a run on the banks follows and the world fundamentally changes as Bitcoin goes infinite against the dollar. He argues this shift in merchant behaviour could mark the start of a broader monetary transformation.
Draper recommends every corporate treasury hold Bitcoin reserves to prepare for that scenario, viewing Bitcoin as superior financial software that will eventually replace banks and government-issued currency. "One Bitcoin is always worth one Bitcoin, but the dollar is constantly depreciating. Eventually, the dollar will become extinct, and the dollar price of Bitcoin will become infinite because the dollar will be zero," he has said.
Bank Run Warning and the Dollar's Fragility
Draper has warned that a run on the banking system is inevitable and that those without Bitcoin in their portfolio will be left behind. "So if the system breaks down, you don't want to be the one clamoring to withdraw cash from the bank or hoarding gold in your room. You want to have enough Bitcoin to hold you and your family over for six months to a year," he said. He has also described it as "irresponsible" for companies not to hold Bitcoin.
The prediction draws on a historical parallel. Draper explained that during the Civil War, the Confederate dollar, originally equal in value to the US dollar, experienced hyperinflation, collapsing to more than 10 million to 1 by the war's end, as trust deteriorated and people scrambled to exchange it for US dollars. He has also noted that the US Dollar Index is having its worst start to the year in its 40-year history, and believes it could fall much further due to escalating geopolitical tensions.
Bitcoin payment adoption is also expanding at the infrastructure level. Square, the payments platform of Block, has begun rolling out Bitcoin payments at its point-of-sale terminals for eligible US sellers as part of a phased rollout. The feature is designed to make it easier for "millions of businesses" to accept Bitcoin, with eligible US sellers receiving US dollars by default when customers pay in Bitcoin.
Draper has a long record of bold Bitcoin calls, not all of which have landed on schedule. He has repeatedly predicted Bitcoin would reach $250,000, citing fiat debasement and adoption as key catalysts, though those deadlines have passed without the target being met. Still, his broader thesis on dollar erosion and Bitcoin adoption continues to attract attention.
