Key Insights

  • U.S. CPI expectations could influence Fed rate decisions and Bitcoin sentiment.
  • Bitcoin trades at $83,044 as traders awaits for an $85,000 recovery.
  • PPI inflation and retail sales data will test the outlook for U.S. price pressures.

Bitcoin price prediction faces another test this week as U.S. inflation reports approach. Traders will assess consumer and producer prices ahead of the Federal Reserve’s Oct. 27–28 policy meeting.

Bitcoin (BTC) recently traded near $83,000 after struggling to sustain its recovery. CoinMarketCap recorded the cryptocurrency at $82,912.23 on Oct. 10, below the $85,000 threshold.

The upcoming releases could affect Treasury yields, interest rate expectations, and demand for risk assets. However, the inflation figures alone will not determine Bitcoin’s next price movement.

U.S. CPI Report Could Change Bitcoin Market Sentiment

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics will release September’s Consumer Price Index on Wednesday, October 14, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time.

Markets expect total inflation to reach around 3.7% annually, while core inflation could rise by 2.5%. In August, overall CPI surged by 0.4% monthly and by 3.4% annually.

Energy prices contributed to August’s increase, with gasoline prices rising 3.9% monthly. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, increased 2.4% annually during the same period.

The latest U.S. CPI figures could change expectations surrounding the Federal Reserve’s October 27–28 meeting. The central bank raised interest rates by 25 basis points in September, bringing its target range to 3.75%–4.00%.

Markets have highly projected a pause in October following slower employment growth and reducing inflation measures.

However, stronger-than-expected headline and core inflation could increase expectations for another rate hike. Conversely, lower inflation could strengthen expectations that policymakers will leave rates unchanged.

PPI Inflation and Retail Sales Add to Economic Uncertainty

Thursday, October 15, will bring September’s Producer Price Index, along with retail sales and weekly initial jobless claims. The PPI inflation report will offer another indication of business cost pressures following the consumer inflation release.

In August, final-demand producer prices increased by 0.4% monthly and 5.4% annually. Goods prices rose by 1.1% month-over-month, a sign of continued pressure in producer prices.

However, investors will consider whether raw material, transportation, and service costs will keep moving through to consumer prices.

In addition, strong retail sales and higher inflation could boost demand for a stronger monetary policy. However, declining consumer spending combined with lower inflation could change interest toward household spending power and economic conditions.

The Federal Reserve’s latest Beige Book, scheduled for release on Wednesday, will provide additional regional information on consumption, hiring, wages, business investment, and prices.

Bitcoin Eyes $85,000 as Traders Monitor Selling Pressure

Bitcoin’s path toward $85,000 remains a market focus ahead of the economic releases. However, the price data places the cryptocurrency at $83,044.41, below that level.

Market commentary from Bitcoin Hopium compared Bitcoin’s price action with the early stages of its 2023 bull run. The account also pointed to a possible reduction in long-term U.S. bond sales as a possible factor affecting yields and cryptocurrency demand.

Meanwhile, The Crypto Johannes warned that Bitcoin’s rebound above $85,000 had pushed its Seller Exhaustion indicator into territory previously associated with local market tops. The account suggested that a correction could follow.

With U.S. CPI arriving on Wednesday and PPI inflation following on Thursday, traders face two closely watched tests of the inflation outlook.

The reports will provide fresh data as markets assess the Federal Reserve’s next policy decision and Bitcoin’s prospects for recovering toward $85,000.
