Bitcoin is trading steadily above $64,000 as open interest in its derivatives market continues to grow, drawing attention from analysts who see similarities to previous periods of increased price volatility.

At present, Bitcoin is priced at $64,542, showing a 0.84% daily gain. The leading cryptocurrency accounted for $12.43 billion in daily trading volume, with total market capitalization standing at $1.29 trillion, according to data from CoinMarketCap.

An analyst known as Alphractal recently highlighted a notable trend: Bitcoin open interest across the 30 largest exchanges has climbed, even as the broader market remains subdued. This rise in open interest reflects a surge in leveraged trading and reflects conditions seen during the 2021-2022 bear market.

Alphractal underscored the importance of measuring open interest in BTC rather than US dollars. This method removes the influence of price swings and provides clarity on the actual scale of leveraged market exposure being built by participants.

The analyst noted that while the market itself moves in cycles, so does behavior in the derivatives sector, where changes in leverage and positioning follow repeatable patterns during phases of market uncertainty.

Mini dictionary: Open Interest, the sum of all open futures and perpetual contracts that have not yet been settled or closed. A rising open interest typically suggests more capital is entering the market and signals the likelihood of increased volatility.

Open interest is rising even in this uncertain market, mirroring patterns seen in previous cycles when calculated in BTC, and may foreshadow significant price swings as positions build up.

Technical indicators show slowing momentum

As open interest rises, Bitcoin’s technical indicators suggest a slowdown in bullish momentum. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) stands at 51.20, with its signal line at 53.82, both near the neutral level. This reflects a market with balanced pressure from both buyers and sellers, offering no clear direction in the short term.

Meanwhile, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator remains positive. The MACD line is at 374.32, above the signal line of 345.38, with a positive histogram of 28.94. Despite these bullish readings, the narrowing gap between the MACD and signal line implies waning upward momentum and a potential shift to sideways trading.

Technical signals point to weaker buying pressure while open interest builds, setting the stage for greater volatility if a new trigger emerges.

The combination of neutral RSI levels and a flattening MACD suggests that the market may remain in a holding pattern, awaiting a clear catalyst to determine its next movement.

Market outlook and potential scenarios

Rising open interest can indicate heightened activity but does not guarantee an increase in price. In previous bear markets, such accumulations often occurred ahead of periods with dramatic swings, especially as leveraged positions were either liquidated or rewarded based on sudden price changes.

Market observers remain watchful, as increased buying demand could fuel an upward breakout. Conversely, any drop in price against a backdrop of high leverage raises the risk of larger corrections as positions unwind.

For the time being, Bitcoin continues to trade near the $64,000 mark with technical indicators showing diminishing momentum and derivatives metrics signaling rising engagement. The confluence of these factors has analysts watching for a critical move in the coming sessions.
