Galaxy Digital Commits $5 Million to Bitcoin Quantum Security

Galaxy Digital has launched the Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative, pledging up to $5 million in developer grants to help protect the Bitcoin network against future quantum computing threats. The firm said it will begin accepting grant applications immediately, with funding focused on quantum-resistant signature schemes, wallet migration tools, and security audits.

The Nasdaq-listed firm also announced a Quantum Advisory Council whose inaugural members include University of Calgary professor Barry Sanders, MIT Sea Grant Knauss Fellow Damien Bérubé, and Boston University computer science professor Eran Tromer.

Galaxy said it hopes other firms will contribute funding and research to accelerate the transition to quantum-resistant cryptography. Galaxy founder and CEO Mike Novogratz said the firm believes it has a responsibility to be part of the solution to any potential threat quantum computing poses to $BTC.

Why the Urgency, and What Comes Next

Bitcoin relies on elliptic curve cryptography, which could eventually be broken by a sufficiently powerful quantum computer. While no cryptographically relevant quantum computer exists today, Galaxy said the expected timeline for developing one is shortening.

Experts warn that preparing upgrades could take years, with as much as 6.9 million Bitcoin, worth around $461 billion at current prices, potentially at risk if the technology advances.Industry experts generally estimate a five to fifteen year window before quantum computers could potentially break current cryptographic standards.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology finalized its first post-quantum cryptography standards in 2024, while a U.S. executive order set a 2031 deadline for federal agencies to prepare for quantum attacks on existing cryptographic systems.

Defenses under discussion include migrating funds to quantum-resistant addresses and adopting new signature schemes through proposals such as BIP-360 and BIP-361, though such upgrades could take years given Bitcoin's decentralized governance. Galaxy's initiative is part of a broader wave of institutional engagement: BitGo recently rolled out quantum-readiness tools for institutional Bitcoin custody, introducing quantum risk scoring and safer UTXO management.Blockstream also highlighted post-quantum cryptography as one of its major engineering priorities in its Q2 2026 report.
