Strategy shares rose 12.15% Aug. 19 as Bitcoin(BTC) neared $70,000, while Michael Saylor warned of potentially “difficult years.”
Key Points:
MSTR closed back above $100 after a 12.15% jump, supported by Bitcoin’s move from below $65,000 toward $70,000.
Saylor said common shareholders may need a time horizon of as long as 10 years as Strategy keeps using complex financing.
Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings were worth about $57.4 billion Wednesday, below the $63.36 billion the company spent acquiring them.
MSTR Bitcoin Rally
Strategy’s MSTR stock opened Wednesday at $94.54 and finished above $100, with 33.85 million shares changing hands during the session. The stock touched $106.90 before settling near $103.76, while Bitcoin gained 5.59% and briefly moved from below $65,000 to nearly $70,000.
The rebound quickly lifted MSTR because Strategy is closely tied to Bitcoin. Its 840,447 BTC holdings make the stock unusually sensitive to cryptocurrency moves, giving equity investors indirect Bitcoin exposure while also amplifying gains and losses.
The rally did not erase months of weakness, as MSTR traded near $190 in May before recently falling toward $90 and then recovering above $100 on Wednesday.
Saylor told shareholders they may need to think over a period as long as 10 years while Strategy continues using equity and other financing tools around its Bitcoin treasury. His message was not a promise of a smooth recovery.
Strategy sold 1,690 BTC for $108.6 million between Aug. 3 and Aug. 9, using the proceeds to repurchase STRC preferred shares, while separate MSTR sales raised $653.1 million. The company also increased its dollar reserve to $4.65 billion, adding another layer to a financing structure already closely watched by investors.
At Wednesday’s Bitcoin price, Strategy’s remaining holdings were worth about $57.4 billion, compared with $63.36 billion spent to acquire them, keeping the investment case tied to both Bitcoin and capital management. MSTR’s drop from about $190 in May toward $90 shows how quickly that exposure can work in reverse.
