Coinbase Markets revealed data indicating that the largest cluster of net long Bitcoin positions was opened at an average of $81,993. With Bitcoin trading below this level, investors have increasingly turned to leveraged strategies. As digital currencies face continued market pressures, this shift comes amid broader liquidations and price volatility.
Majority of Positions Underwater
Coinbase Markets reported that 64% of net long nominal sizes were established above the current spot price. This suggests that a significant portion of these long positions may be vulnerable, given Bitcoin’s current lower trading levels. As a leading U.S.-based cryptocurrency platform, Coinbase provides market data on institutional and professional investors’ transactions.
Coinbase Markets explained, “Net long Bitcoin positions’ largest cluster was initiated at an average of $81,993, with 64% above the spot price.”
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin had decreased by 1.50% over the past 24 hours, settling at $80,595. The broader digital currency market also experienced selling pressures, maintaining the fragility observed earlier in the week. This market volatility raises concerns about further downward pressure on these positions.
According to Coinglass data, the past day witnessed $481.25 million in cryptocurrency market liquidations, including $346.15 million from long positions. Bitcoin accounted for $95.06 million of total liquidations, with $85.90 million from long positions and $9.16 million from short ones.
Options Market Anticipates Downtrend
Should Bitcoin’s decline persist, forced closures of leveraged long positions might accelerate, exacerbating selling pressure. Conversely, renewed buying interest could support prices, potentially drawing them back to the entry region around $81,993.
Coinbase’s additional insights on Bitcoin options highlighted a marked downtrend priced along the volatility curve. The BTC 25 delta skew was recorded at 11.3% for one day, 10.5% for one week, and 10.8% for one month. For a one-year tenure, the measure stood at 3.9%.
This data indicates higher implied volatility for put options compared to similar call options, reflecting a market bias towards downside protection. Investors in the options market are showing an increased demand for hedging against short- and medium-term downside risks.
Coinbase stated, “BTC options across tenures exhibit higher implied volatility for puts than comparable calls, signaling a downward trend.”
Moving forward, attention will center on whether investors choose to maintain losing long positions or reduce exposure to mitigate risks. This decision could significantly influence Bitcoin’s short-term trajectory, depending on prevailing market conditions.
