As Bitcoin enthusiasts witness a rise in profitability metrics, Bitcoin supply profitability has shown promising improvement. However, data analysts emphasize that these gains alone do not necessarily herald the onset of a new bullish phase.

What Does the Increase in Profitability Mean?

Onchain data from CryptoQuant has highlighted that as of July 22, 57.5% of Bitcoin’s supply was in profit, up from the year-low of 46.2% observed in June. This escalation indicates a more favorable market climate compared to the previous months when over half of the Bitcoin supply was unprofitable.

Presently, nearly 60% of Bitcoins in circulation reflect profit, suggesting market revival, though not definitively predicting a bull market. A sustained and consistent uptick is emphasized as vital for the potential long-term market recovery.

Is Long-term Holder Behavior a Game Changer?

Although long-term holders (LTHs), entities retaining Bitcoin for six months or more, have shown improved profit-taking activity, overall onchain losses overshadow their gains. CryptoQuant’s data shows the long-term holder spent output profit ratio (SOPR) still falls below 1.0, underscoring that Bitcoin moved by LTHs is often sold at a loss.

The chart of LTH-SOPR’s 30-day simple moving average staying under 1 implies enduring challenges for long-term holders in securing profits.

Requirements for a Market Shift

Market turnaround is deemed likely only if two main conditions are fulfilled: extending the LTH-SOPR beyond 1 for weeks and ensuring 64% of the supply remains profitable. Although past attempts like April’s were promising, sustaining these conditions remains a challenge.

  • A confirmed recovery entails maintaining an LTH-SOPR above 1 for several weeks.
  • The profitable supply should surpass 64% during recovery phases.
  • Current market indicators resemble past bear market situations but have not met these conditions.

Earlier this year, Bitcoin’s unprofitable supply surged beyond the halfway mark, often suggesting bear market troughs. Observers are keenly watching these profitability levels.

Are Market Signals Indicating a Shift?

The current state of demand presents a mixed picture. Retail interest remains subdued, while institutional investments show flickers of reemergence. Many experts consider these observations reflective of concluding bear market scenarios.

The interplay between rising profitability and continued holder losses aligns with previous cyclical behaviors, maintaining Bitcoin’s volatility potential. Market participants are vigilant, searching for consistent signals to indicate a definitive market rebound.
