Bitcoin’s largest on-chain holders kept buying through October’s pullback. Wallets holding between 10 and 10,000 BTC added more than 85,000 coins over roughly three weeks, according to Santiment’s latest weekly on-chain review, a pace the analytics firm says has appeared only twice in the past year. The buying did not prevent the price from sliding from an October 4 high near $87,000 to about $80,000 on October 8, and Bitcoin sat near $81,600 at the time of the recording, down roughly 6% from that high.

On October 15, Santiment’s X account reported that the number of wallets holding 10 to 10,000 BTC reached an all-time high of 20,338, climbing steadily since mid-July even as the price repeatedly chopped.

The Signal and Its Two Precedents

The 85,000-coin addition is the kind of pace Santiment says “appears rarely on the chart.” The closest comparisons are mid-April 2026, during peak Israel, Iran, and US tensions, and the stretch from late November 2025 to mid-January 2026. Those two episodes point in opposite directions: the first was followed by rising prices, while the second preceded a 34% drawdown. That split is the analytical question at the center of the data — large-wallet accumulation has historically preceded both recoveries and reversals.

The accumulation has also shown up on the exchange side. As Bitcoin’s whale cohort has grown, coins have been leaving exchanges, a supply-side dynamic that typically reads as bullish but has not yet translated into a sustained move above the recent range.

Why the Setup Is Not Cleanly Bullish

The countercase comes from the smallest wallets. Addresses holding 0.01 BTC or less have risen for most of the year, and since late September both large and small cohorts have been buying at the same time. Santiment’s team calls that combination a potential obstacle to a move toward $90,000, noting that past rallies have usually required retail to sell into large-wallet buying rather than both sides accumulating together.

Valuation has reset rather than gone extreme. The 30-day MVRV ratio, which measures unrealized profit or loss across recently moved coins, fell to about -1.6%, while the 365-day reading sits near -0.48%, leaving the average buyer of the past year roughly at break-even. Santiment treats negative MVRV readings as historically lower-risk entry zones than positive ones, but a reset to neutral is not itself proof of a bottom.

What Has to Change Before the Signal Resolves

Santiment’s own caveat is that follow-through matters more than the accumulation itself. The pattern of whales buying while price stalls can persist until either retail capitulates or a macro catalyst forces direction. The firm points to one more potential rate hike before year end and to US midterm-election uncertainty as forces keeping markets range-bound.

That is consistent with the choppy trading seen over the past day, when Bitcoin dipped below $80,000 on October 15 before reclaiming the $83,000 level on October 16. For now, the record 20,338-strong whale cohort is a notable positioning shift, not a confirmed directional signal. The next observable test is whether Bitcoin can hold above $80,000 on a sustained basis, or whether the same large wallets that accumulated begin to distribute if the range breaks down.
