Key takeaways

  • BlackRock downgrades U.S. stocks from overweight to neutral
  • Short-term Treasuries gain favor as yields reach 5.25%
  • AI stocks remain attractive despite growing market volatility

BlackRock has downgraded its outlook on U.S. stocks from overweight to neutral, citing heightened market volatility and increasingly attractive returns from government bonds as investors reassess the risks surrounding artificial intelligence.

In its October 12 market commentary, the world's largest asset manager upgraded short-term U.S. Treasuries to overweight and longer-term Treasuries to neutral. The shift comes as 10-year Treasury yields reach approximately 5.25%, offering investors substantially higher income than in previous years.

BlackRock Reduces Stock Exposure as Treasury Yields Hit 5.25%

BlackRock is closing its long-held overweight position in U.S. equities to partly finance additional Treasury exposure. The firm now prefers shorter-duration government bonds, which offer income while limiting sensitivity to further interest-rate increases.

The decision follows a significant change in the bond market. BlackRock had maintained an underweight position in long-term Treasuries since October 2020, when the 10-year yield stood below 0.9%.

With yields now around 5.25%, government debt presents a more competitive alternative to stocks. This reversal is particularly relevant for investors who previously favored equities despite rising borrowing costs and expensive valuations.

The pressure was already visible when the Nasdaq reached new highs despite Treasury yields exceeding 5.3%, highlighting how heavily market performance depended on major technology companies.

AI Stock Volatility Adds Pressure to U.S. Markets

Despite its downgrade, BlackRock continues to favor AI-related companies and technology infrastructure. The firm believes artificial intelligence will generate long-term economic opportunities, but higher interest rates are increasingly separating profitable businesses from those dependent on future growth expectations.

That distinction matters as AI stocks face renewed selling pressure. All 30 companies in the PHLX Semiconductor Index declined during Monday's session, while Nvidia shares fell approximately 1.7%.

Concerns about returns on AI infrastructure investment have also weighed on semiconductor valuations. Earlier revenue uncertainty surrounding OpenAI contributed to declines in Nvidia, AMD and other technology companies.

BlackRock's decision reflects these broader risks without suggesting that the AI investment cycle has ended.

What BlackRock's Downgrade Means for the S&P 500

The shift comes ahead of Wednesday's U.S. inflation report, which could influence Federal Reserve expectations and Treasury yields.

Higher-than-expected inflation could increase pressure on expensive technology stocks, particularly as AI concentration leaves the S&P 500 increasingly dependent on a small group of companies.
