- Partnership explores connecting money market funds with JPYSC
- Commercial launch and participating funds remain unconfirmed
BlackRock has signed an agreement with Japanese financial giant SBI Holdings and blockchain developer Startale Group to explore connecting tokenized money market funds with JPYSC, a regulated yen-denominated stablecoin.
The companies announced the memorandum of understanding on October 27, marking another step in BlackRock's expansion into blockchain-based financial infrastructure.
Unlike existing tokenized fund products, however, the proposed arrangement remains exploratory. The partners have not identified a participating fund, selected a blockchain or announced a commercial launch date.
BlackRock Explores Yen Stablecoin Settlement for Tokenized Funds
The agreement involves BlackRock Financial Management, BlackRock Japan, SBI Holdings and Startale Group.
The companies will examine three areas: technological infrastructure, business and distribution opportunities, and regulatory requirements for linking tokenized money market funds with JPYSC.
Money market funds invest primarily in short-term financial instruments, while tokenization represents ownership interests through blockchain-based records.
Connecting those instruments with a yen stablecoin could eventually make it easier for eligible institutions to move between fund shares and digital cash without relying entirely on conventional settlement processes.
BlackRock already operates the BUIDL tokenized liquidity fund, which previously expanded to Avalanche and other blockchain networks.
Its institutional tokenization strategy has also included stablecoin-related fund changes intended to accommodate the needs of digital asset businesses.
The new agreement does not establish that BUIDL itself will be integrated with JPYSC.
SBI's Yen Stablecoin Becomes Central to Japan's Onchain Push
JPYSC is issued through SBI Shinsei Trust Bank under Japan's regulated trust-based stablecoin framework.
Developed with Startale, the stablecoin is intended to support payments, settlements and transactions involving tokenized financial assets.
Coinpaper previously covered JPYSC's introduction, highlighting how its trust-bank structure differs from offshore stablecoin models.
SBI has also expanded its digital finance operations through an Ondo Finance partnership focused on tokenized Japanese equities.
On October 16, SBI and Startale separately announced plans to explore interoperability between JPYSC and Open USD, another dollar-denominated stablecoin initiative.
That work is independent of the new BlackRock agreement, although both efforts aim to connect different parts of institutional digital finance.
Why BlackRock's Involvement Matters
BlackRock's participation gives the proposed system access to substantial asset-management expertise, while SBI contributes distribution channels and knowledge of Japan's financial regulations.
Startale brings blockchain development capabilities, including work on infrastructure designed for tokenized securities.
The agreement arrives as financial institutions examine whether blockchain technology can reduce settlement friction without weakening existing investor protections.
BlackRock has already explored blockchain-based liquidity through BUIDL's stablecoin integrations, demonstrating how tokenized fund shares can interact with digital payment assets.
Separately, the asset manager recently supported tokenized portfolio products developed with Ondo Finance.
