BlackRock's Head of Digital Assets, Robert Mitchnick, says investor sentiment toward $BTC has turned in a meaningful way, even if the shift has been subtle. Speaking during a televised interview, Mitchnick said there are reasons to believe there has been a perception shift around Bitcoin over the past month or so, pointing in particular to the cryptocurrency beginning to decouple from equities earlier this year.

For a stretch, that decoupling worked against Bitcoin because equities, particularly AI-related stocks, were surging while Bitcoin moved sideways to lower. But Mitchnick now frames the separation as a positive development, one that validates Bitcoin's place in a diversified portfolio.

Bitcoin as a Portfolio Diversifier

Mitchnick noted that Bitcoin showed relative strength when AI-related shares faced a sharp correction in July, and said the decoupling supports the case for Bitcoin as a portfolio diversification tool and a potential hedge against extreme downside risk.In his words, "that decoupling is healthy because it's part of the thesis for a lot of people around bitcoin as a diversifier."

The core argument is one Mitchnick has been building for some time: Bitcoin does not move in lockstep with stocks, and that makes it genuinely useful in a portfolio. The commentary carries weight because it reflects the views of BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager.

Asked how the downturn has affected ETF investors, Mitchnick said the base has consistently tended to consist of fundamental, long-term, buy-and-hold investors. He acknowledged Bitcoin has now been through five major boom-and-bust cycles, noting that each time the cycle ends significantly higher than the prior one, but with a bumpy ride along the way.

ETF Inflows Back BlackRock's View

Last week, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs logged their best inflow week since mid-April, drawing about $853.5 million in a five-session inflow streak as of Friday.BlackRock's IBIT fund registered $693.7 million of those inflows, more than 80% of the total across all spot Bitcoin ETFs.

The surge in inflows offers a tentative sign that institutions are dipping back in after heavy selling earlier this year.Mitchnick also observed that spot Bitcoin ETF investors generally appear to have a long-term holding bias, suggesting the ETF channel is attracting buy-and-hold investors rather than short-term traders.
