BlackRock has cut the in-kind conversion minimum for its iShares Bitcoin Trust ($IBIT) from $25 million to $1 million, a 96% reduction that opens the mechanism to a significantly broader pool of institutional participants.

What the Change Means

In-kind conversion lets an authorized participant hand over actual bitcoin and receive IBIT shares in return, rather than settling the transaction in cash.At $25 million, in-kind conversion was effectively reserved for large market makers and institutional trading desks capable of moving that much bitcoin at once.Dropping the threshold to $1 million brings a far broader set of authorized participants and mid-sized institutions into the mechanism.

The tax efficiency is the real story: institutions holding appreciated $BTC can now swap into IBIT shares without triggering a taxable cash-sale event, at a threshold accessible to RIAs and family offices, not just Wall Street trading desks.

The change was disclosed in an updated IBIT filing and relates to in-kind creation and redemption activity, not retail holders directly swapping ETF shares for Bitcoin.Investors cannot transact directly with BlackRock, as authorized participants continue to act as intermediaries.

BlackRock Eyes Further Reductions

BlackRock slashed IBIT's in-kind conversion minimum from $25 million to $1 million, per Robbie Mitchnick on Bloomberg TV's ETF IQ, August 10, 2026.Mitchnick has signaled BlackRock intends to push the threshold toward zero, a trajectory that would turn IBIT into a frictionless BTC-to-share conversion vehicle embedded in standard brokerage infrastructure.

The practical effect is a tighter link between IBIT's share price and the underlying spot price of bitcoin.Regulators cleared issuers to offer in-kind creation and redemption for spot bitcoin ETFs earlier in 2026. The move comes against a backdrop of strong product momentum: IBIT captured $479 million across a three-day stretch last week, good for roughly 76% of total spot bitcoin ETF inflows during that window.

What the lower threshold does change is the choice set: going forward, more Bitcoin holders can consider the ETF path without an insurmountable size barrier.
