The BNB Chain community is gearing up for the imminent Pasteur hard fork update, just two days away. This significant upgrade is set to introduce an enhanced block verification process, more secure validator key rotations, and increased transaction capacity per block.
A Shift from Speed to Efficiency?
Unlike the significant updates earlier in the year, Pasteur takes a fresh approach. January’s Fermi upgrade remarkably reduced block times to 0.45 seconds, while the Osaka and Mendel fork in April stabilized operations at this pace. Pasteur aims to optimize the use of current speed while addressing two vulnerabilities that allow validators to maintain their authority longer than intended.
According to the developers, three proposals grouped under BEP-673 will be activated with this upgrade. The enhancements include BEP-682 for robust bridge verification, BEP-695 ensuring proper validator key rotations, and BEP-675, which targets optimized block compositions.
The BNB Chain team announced that the Pasteur update would bring stronger bridge validation, more secure validator key rotations, and greater per block capacity to the network.
What are the Key Technical Changes?
BEP-682 and BEP-695 focus on fortifying the bridge structure and governance mechanisms. BEP-675 aims to fill blocks more efficiently. Test network evaluations showed that the transaction capacity soared from 1,237 to 2,324 transactions per second.
In this design, a block proposer can relay a previously executed block to a validator, who then examines it per consensus rules, signs, and publishes it, completing full validation later. Such infrastructure details encourage investors to closely monitor data flows during capacity-hungry periods, especially at crucial resistance levels. BEP-675 aligns with the 2026 roadmap for capacity enhancement. Consequently, Pasteur is seen not just as a short-term technical adjustment but as a critical step in a broader effort to expand network throughput.
Capacity Boost Marks 2026 Targets
In the first half of 2026, BSC reduced block intervals to 450 milliseconds, slashed in-memory finality to 650 milliseconds, and pushed transaction processing benchmarks close to 5,200 TPS. The target for the second half includes doubling mainnet throughput once again.
The BNB Chain team emphasizes that this plan indicates a 10-fold improvement network-wide in the long run. The Pasteur hard fork is a key part of the initiative to double the mainnet transaction capacity.
