Can Apple Charge You If Its Own Software Update Breaks Your iPhone?

What happens if you install an official iPhone update, something breaks, and Apple tells you to pay for the repair?

India's consumer regulator is now examining that question.

The Central Consumer Protection Authority has escalated an investigation into Apple's warranty terms after complaints that iOS 18 allegedly caused display, microphone and other problems on some iPhones. Customers were then asked to pay repair costs the regulator described as “exorbitant.”

Apple disputes the allegations, saying it found no systemic iOS 18 problem in India and that its warranty practices follow industry norms.

A $291 Repair After an Update?

Some complaints involved iPhones developing green, pink or white lines across their displays after installing iOS 18.

Replacing an iPhone 15 display in India can cost around 27,900 rupees ($291), more than a third of the phone's retail price.

The regulator's concern is simple: if Apple's own software caused the hardware problem, should the customer have to pay?

Apple argues that a fault appearing after an update does not prove the update caused it. Establishing that link is now central to the investigation.

Can Apple Actually Make You Pay?

For now, yes, depending on the circumstances and local consumer law.

Apple's limited warranty primarily covers hardware, while software is governed by separate terms. But regulators could challenge those protections if they conclude an Apple-issued update directly caused a hardware defect.

The dispute comes at a sensitive time. Investors are expecting Apple's newest devices and AI features to drive a major iPhone upgrade cycle, making confidence in the software supporting those devices increasingly important.

India Is Becoming More Important for Apple

India is no longer a small market for the iPhone.

Apple's share of the country's smartphone market increased from roughly 4% in 2022 to 9% in 2025, while the company has also expanded manufacturing there.

The investigation also arrives as investors digest Apple's latest iPhone lineup and debate whether Apple stock can justify its premium valuation.

That makes expensive repair disputes especially awkward as Apple tries to expand in one of its most important growth markets.

This Could Go Beyond iOS 18

Apple says the investigation stems from only 75 complaints, while India's regulator is considering whether the issue affects consumers more broadly.

The bigger question isn't whether Apple should pay whenever an iPhone develops a problem after an update.

It's what happens when Apple's own software can actually be shown to have caused the damage.
