The official YouTube channel of Input Output Group, a key blockchain engineering company behind Cardano, was compromised this week and began broadcasting fraudulent content using deepfake representations of Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson. The incident has exposed Cardano’s community to a high-risk scam campaign actively targeting users through the reputable channel.
On September 18, Charles Hoskinson took to X to alert followers that Input Output Group’s (IOG) YouTube account had been breached. Hoskinson stated that the team was cooperating with YouTube to remove the unauthorized videos and restore the channel’s security credentials. He urged viewers to avoid engaging with any new content or clicking on posted links.
Input Output Group also issued its own warning, strongly advising users against interacting with any content from its YouTube channel until further notice. Among the videos released during the breach was a livestream featuring an apparently AI-generated version of Hoskinson that promoted what appeared to be a cryptocurrency giveaway.
During this fraudulent stream, viewers were encouraged to scan a QR code, as part of what was falsely presented as a Project Catalyst town hall. The scam promised users the ability to “double” their holdings of ADA, Cardano’s native cryptocurrency, if they sent funds to a given address.

Cardano’s official security guidelines explicitly list false livestreams and deceptive “send ADA, receive more ADA back” offers as scam tactics. The project clarified that sending ADA is never required for authentic giveaways or promotions.
IOG cautioned users not to send money, click on links, or share personal details until the team regains full control over the channel and all suspicious content is removed.
The Cardano team emphasized that all videos, QR codes, and links stemming from the compromised channel should be treated as potential security threats. They reported that they are actively working to restore the safety of the official account.
The community interaction on X beneath Hoskinson’s warning post reflected some frustration, with one widely-liked comment referencing previous negative experiences and urging caution.
Despite concerns, current reports do not indicate any compromise of the Cardano blockchain itself. The incident is limited to the IOG-managed YouTube channel and related social media accounts. There is no widespread vulnerability affecting users’ ADA holdings as a result of the hack.
Security experts advise users to remain vigilant and refrain from any financial transactions or personal data submission until Input Output Group confirms the restoration of its digital platforms. Only official updates from trusted Cardano and IOG channels should be followed during this period.
