Cboe Global Markets and S&P Dow Jones Indices have signed a 25-year extension of their exclusive licensing agreement, keeping Cboe’s exclusive rights to offer S&P 500 Index (SPX) options through 2051 and creating room to explore tokenized options contracts, the companies announced on Sept. 29.
The deal continues a partnership that began in 1983 with the launch of SPX options, a product that has since become the global standard for gaining and managing U.S. equity market exposure.
Two market giants extend a four-decade partnership
Under the extended terms, Cboe retains the exclusive right to trade its flagship S&P 500 Index options, while the two firms may also collaborate on products beyond traditional index derivatives, including tokenized options contracts. The agreement builds on more than 40 years of collaboration and is framed by the companies as a foundation for continued growth of Cboe’s SPX and VIX franchises.
Tokenized options enter the roadmap, without a timeline
Neither company disclosed a specific tokenized options product or a launch date. The release describes tokenization as one possible direction under innovation across next-generation markets and technologies, leaving any rollout to later decisions. Cboe chief executive Craig Donohue said the extension gives the firm significant runway to pursue the next frontier of innovation and stay ahead of evolving investor needs and emerging technologies, adding that the opportunities ahead are as compelling as those that first brought our organizations together 43 years ago.
Why the extension matters
SPX options are among the world’s most liquid and actively traded index options, and the license underpins one of Cboe’s flagship businesses. S&P DJI chief executive Catherine Clay called the S&P 500 the definitive barometer of U.S. equity market performance and the most widely tracked index in the world. She said investor demand for U.S. equity exposure continues to accelerate, and the firms see a future where every investor, everywhere, can access the benchmark in the format that best suits their needs. The tokenization exploration also extends Cboe’s growing crypto footprint — its BZX exchange is seeking approval to list a spot SUI ETF — and sits alongside a broader TradFi move toward on-chain market infrastructure, including The Clearing House’s tokenized deposit network.
