Crypto wrench attacks emerged as a growing security concern for the digital asset industry in the first half of 2026, according to CertiK’s H1 2026 Wrench Attacks Report. These incidents, which involve physical threats or violence to force individuals to surrender their crypto holdings, increased sharply during the period.
Incidents and Financial Impact Rise Sharply
CertiK recorded 52 verified wrench attacks worldwide in the first six months of 2026, a notable rise from 39 cases during the same period in 2025. The associated financial exposure escalated from approximately $10.5 million last year to $124.1 million this year. Notably, the number of home invasions jumped from one reported case in the first half of 2025 to 20 in the same period of 2026.
These numbers reflect only publicly verified incidents and known losses, which include reported ransom demands and missing funds, rather than confirmed criminal proceeds. CertiK emphasized that underreporting continues to affect these statistics, potentially leaving the actual extent of such attacks unclear.
CertiK stated that public incident figures likely underestimate the real scale of wrench attacks globally, due to underreporting and incomplete data on actual losses.
Europe and France See Highest Concentration
Geographically, Europe has seen a clear rise in targeted incidents. Of the 52 cases reported globally, 39 occurred in Europe, with France alone accounting for 33 attacks. This made France the country with the highest number of confirmed wrench attacks in CertiK’s most recent dataset.
The report linked this trend to a combination of factors, including the large crypto community in Western Europe, widespread availability of information that may help perpetrators identify targets, and a higher degree of transparency in reporting such incidents.
Instead of attributing the rise to a single driving factor, CertiK pointed out the growing concentration of physical risks for crypto holders in Western Europe.
Advancing Security Measures Beyond Wallet Protection
While software-based wallet security remains essential, CertiK underlined that technical solutions alone may not be sufficient to stop attacks involving physical coercion. The firm recommended implementing custody measures designed to limit the power of a single person to transfer large sums under duress. These methods include multi-party transaction approvals, withdrawal delays, transaction amount limits, and staged custody controls, all of which can slow down unauthorized outflows and offer a window for incident response.
This shift in threat landscape has broadened the conversation around digital asset protection, now encompassing not just the safeguarding of crypto wallets but also the physical safety of individuals who manage and control these holdings.
CertiK’s findings indicated that as coercion-based attacks rise, industry focus will increasingly turn to protecting both digital assets and the people behind them, urging stakeholders to reassess personal security and operational procedures.
To help users adapt to this evolving landscape, integrating technical portfolio solutions and market monitoring tools has gained attention. CertiK’s report underscored the importance of a multi-layered approach in response to the growing threat of wrench attacks, involving both technological safeguards and increased personal awareness.
