Coinbase Completes Its US Derivatives Stack

Coinbase has secured a landmark regulatory approval in the United States. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization on September 28, 2026, through a commission order. The move makes Coinbase the first digital assets company to hold a regulated exchange, broker, and clearinghouse license in the same jurisdiction under one corporate umbrella.

The CFTC approved Coinbase Clearing LLC as a US derivatives clearinghouse, letting it clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps, but not leveraged products. Before this registration, Coinbase Derivatives, the company's CFTC-designated contract market, routed trades through Nodal Clear as an external clearinghouse.Coinbase Clearing converts that arrangement into an in-house operation, giving Coinbase direct control over the clearing process rather than routing it through an outside firm.

USDC as Native Collateral and Round-the-Clock Settlement

Coinbase said its clearinghouse will use USDC collateral and support 24/7 settlement, describing the operation as a USDC-native clearinghouse within its US derivatives business. That is a meaningful shift from conventional clearing, which depends on bank operating hours and dollar-based rails. Because USDC settles on blockchain rails rather than through the banking system, collateral transfers and margin calls can happen around the clock, without waiting for banks to open. For institutional traders managing risk across time zones, that removes a scheduling constraint that dollar-based clearing has historically imposed.

Coinbase's margined derivatives and planned single-stock perpetuals will still rely on outside clearing partners. With the approval, Coinbase operates three separate CFTC-regulated entities in its US derivatives business: Coinbase Financial Markets, Inc., a Futures Commission Merchant; Coinbase Derivatives, LLC, a Designated Contract Market where contracts are listed and traded; and Coinbase Clearing LLC, which now adds the clearing and settlement layer. The addition of Coinbase Clearing LLC slots the missing piece into that structure, bringing the full trade lifecycle, from execution to settlement, under one roof on a blockchain-based system.
