The @CFTC convened its newly formed Innovation Advisory Committee (IAC) in Washington on August 20, holding the panel's first-ever session to address some of the most pressing questions in financial regulation. The meeting ran from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, with in-person attendance for committee members and a virtual option for the public.
A High-Profile Roster
The committee's membership reflects the scale of ambition behind it. Its 43 members include the chief executives of Coinbase, Ripple, Kraken, Gemini, OKX and Solana Labs, plus the heads of CME, Nasdaq and Intercontinental Exchange.@Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, @coinbase's Brian Armstrong and @chainlink founder Sergey Nazarov are among the prominent industry voices on the panel, alongside Robinhood leadership. The committee is sponsored by CFTC Chairman Mike Selig (@ChairmanSelig), who set out his vision ahead of the session. Selig said the United States faces a choice over how it approaches emerging financial technologies, and the meeting was designed to bring industry participants and technology experts together for a public discussion on how those technologies are changing financial markets.
The IAC replaces the former Technology Advisory Committee and was established to address the rapid evolution of financial technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and cloud computing.
Agenda: Crypto, AI and Prediction Markets
The IAC's agenda covers crypto assets, artificial intelligence and prediction markets, along with recent CFTC activity in these areas. The prediction-market segment drew particular attention. Of the three-hour session, 50 minutes were allocated to prediction markets, expressly including ongoing proceedings with state regulators. That discussion comes as platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket face disputes with state regulators over whether certain event contracts should fall under federal derivatives rules or state gambling laws.
The meeting also carries broader political weight. It came one day after President Donald Trump hosted crypto and prediction-market executives and senior U.S. financial regulators at the White House, where digital asset regulation was also discussed.Trump called on Congress to pass a "fair version" of the CLARITY Act during that gathering.
Members of the public wishing to submit written comments on the proceedings may do so through August 27.
