The United States has become a net importer of Bitcoin for the first time since 2022, according to a new report published by Chainalysis. The data provider stated that large American institutions are driving Bitcoin accumulation, while dollar-linked stablecoins see growing global usage outside the U.S.

Institutional buying and ETF impact

Chainalysis reported that institutional investors in the U.S. have been actively acquiring Bitcoin throughout 2026, reversing previous trends where retail investors played the dominant role. Retail traders, by contrast, have been more inclined to sell.

“The rest of the world is pivoting to a digital dollar because it meets a need that American users don’t share. Meanwhile, Americans are leaning harder on bitcoin as an infinitely scarce store of value,” the report stated.

The report noted that, following the introduction of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in 2024, American dominance in global Bitcoin trading has strengthened during each reporting period.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024, after years of denying similar products. Prominent financial firms, including BlackRock, Fidelity, and most recently Morgan Stanley, have launched these funds, which track Bitcoin’s price and handle the coin’s buying and selling for investors.

Chainalysis emphasized that the approval and rapid adoption of Bitcoin ETFs have matured the U.S. digital assets industry and increased institutional investment in Bitcoin.

Stablecoin expansion abroad

While the U.S. acquires more Bitcoin, dollar-pegged stablecoins have found significant traction overseas, especially in countries lacking easy access to the U.S. financial system. Chainalysis highlighted stablecoins as an effective digital alternative for holding dollars without needing an American bank account, which is unnecessary for most U.S. users but critical abroad.

The report added that stablecoins increasingly support peer-to-peer economies and cross-border business transactions. The widespread adoption has directly benefited U.S. companies and contributed billions in economic activity to the U.S. government.

In the 2026 period we continued to see stablecoins enter new use cases most especially abroad, benefitting the U.S. companies, and the U.S. government, with billions of dollars in economic activity.

Since 2025, the GENIUS Act has allowed banks and other qualified entities to issue stablecoins, provided these tokens are backed by assets like U.S. Treasuries. The legislation also mandates monthly disclosures of reserves to promote transparency.

President Donald Trump, since taking office, has signed several bills and executive orders supporting the crypto sector, including this landmark regulation. Trump is the current President of the United States.

Despite the American crypto market’s overall contraction of 2.2% in a bear market, the industry has retained much of its value since nearly doubling in 2025. According to Chainalysis, the U.S. crypto economy now stands at $2.78 trillion.
