@chainlink ($LINK) is now publishing Vault Risk Assessments from @SPGlobalRatings onchain, with @base as the first supported blockchain. The assessments give S&P's view of the risk facing depositors in a lending vault, and are designed to be read directly by lending platforms and DeFi protocols.

The integration is live, according to a Chainlink press release issued on October 28, 2026. It uses Chainlink DataLink, an institutional-grade data publishing service, while the Chainlink Runtime Environment (CRE) coordinates retrieval of S&P's data and its publication onchain. A Chainlink decentralized oracle network retrieves the source data, reaches consensus on the reported values and delivers them onchain.

What the Assessments Cover

S&P Global Ratings describes its Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) as a forward-looking opinion on the relative risk of impairment to an investor's position in a lending vault. According to the same release, the analysis considers portfolio credit quality and liquidity mismatch, alongside risks tied to the curator, the blockchain, the protocol, and vault security and governance.

S&P is explicit about the limits. A VRA is not a credit rating and does not comment on yield levels. The framework was first unveiled in Singapore on October 4, 2026, as Crypto Briefing reported.

A Fast-Growing Vault Market

Lending vaults pool deposits and deploy them under defined strategies, working much like managed fixed income funds. S&P Global Ratings says deposits in these vaults reached approximately $10 billion in September 2026, up from $1.5 billion two years earlier, a rise of roughly 6.7 times.

That growth has outpaced disclosure. S&P has noted that while blockchain activity shows transactions at a point in time, strategy and risk disclosures across vaults have remained limited, according to its October 4 announcement. Crypto Briefing also pointed to the permissionless nature of DeFi vaults: unlike traditional fund managers, who generally need approval before taking client money, anyone can launch a vault and accept deposits.

Johann Eid, chief business officer at Chainlink Labs, said bringing the assessments onchain gives institutions and DeFi protocols one shared, verifiable view of risk. Developers can also build applications that let depositors compare assessed vaults and monitor changes in their risk profiles, Finadium reported.

The vault assessments extend an existing collaboration. S&P Global Ratings previously brought its Stablecoin Stability Assessments onchain through Chainlink DataLink, also starting on Base, according to The Block.
