Citigroup announced it is preparing to launch Citi digital asset custody later this year, beginning with Bitcoin. The service will operate through Custody+, a new suite designed for near-real-time institutional custody. Citi plans to combine traditional securities and digital assets within the same operational framework. The bank serves custody clients across more than 100 markets worldwide.

Citi Digital Asset Custody Expands Custody+ Infrastructure

Citi launched Custody+ on Tuesday as institutional markets move toward faster settlement and continuous trading. The platform uses Citi’s infrastructure to support different custody models, including digital assets.

The bank said clients will receive a unified custody experience for traditional and crypto assets. This approach allows institutions to manage both asset types through the same framework.

Citi digital asset custody will use the bank’s common digital asset architecture. Bitcoin will be the first cryptocurrency supported when the service launches later this year.

Citi’s custody business operates in 62 proprietary markets within its wider network. The bank also invests more than $2 billion annually in its services platform strategy.

Citi Digital Asset Custody Targets Real-Time Markets

The Citi digital asset custody rollout follows a broader investment in real-time financial infrastructure. Custody+ uses Citi’s Single Event Processing technology to support faster settlement and transaction processing.

The suite also includes on-demand foreign exchange, automated hedging and real-time execution tools. Citi has expanded its Market Guide platform with AI-powered market intelligence capabilities.

Citi already provides near-instant movement of tokenized deposits around the clock through Citi Token Services. The new custody offering extends that digital asset infrastructure toward institutional asset safekeeping.

The move places Citi digital asset custody alongside services from major custodians entering native crypto custody. BNY Mellon, State Street and Standard Chartered have also expanded their digital asset capabilities.

Citi had previously indicated that a digital asset custody service was under development. The bank now expects Bitcoin custody to become available later this year through Custody+.
