The banking industry is demonstrating greater interest in blockchain payment solutions, with Citigroup forming a notable partnership with cryptocurrency firm Coinbase to bring stablecoin payment capabilities to its institutional clients. Financial analyst Levi, known for his insights on digital assets, highlighted this collaboration as a sign that major financial institutions are moving towards blockchain-based infrastructure.

Citigroup and Coinbase expand stablecoin payments

Citigroup, one of the world’s largest banks managing approximately $2.8 trillion in assets, has expanded its institutional relationship with Coinbase. This collaboration allows Citi’s corporate and enterprise clients to use stablecoin payments in their operations. Citi acts as the bank responsible for fiat currency settlements, while Coinbase supplies the technology for processing stablecoin transactions.

Levi described the move as a significant step for mainstream banking institutions entering the blockchain ecosystem. In a recent video, he stated, “The banking system is starting to speak crypto,” while discussing the implications of Citi’s partnership with Coinbase.

“The banking system is starting to speak crypto,” Levi said, highlighting Citi’s moves with Coinbase and underscoring the growing integration of blockchain technology into traditional finance.

Citigroup’s solution allows incoming fiat payments to be converted into stablecoins. Enterprise merchants using “Spring by Citi” can receive stablecoin payments without holding cryptocurrency, providing additional flexibility and removing some of the operational concerns associated with digital assets.

Coinbase is a leading cryptocurrency exchange and blockchain infrastructure provider based in the United States, facilitating digital asset trading, custody, and payment processing for both retail and institutional clients.

Mini dictionary: Stablecoin, a type of cryptocurrency that is pegged to a stable asset such as fiat currency (often the US dollar), designed to minimize price volatility and used for digital payments and settlements.

Levi connected these moves in banking technology to XRP, a digital asset developed by Ripple and known for facilitating cross-border payments. He emphasized that if more banks incorporate blockchain-based payments, assets like XRP could become increasingly relevant for transferring value between different jurisdictions.

Levi raised the possibility that ongoing institutional adoption could drive higher demand for XRP, stating, “If banks keep moving in this direction, you have to wonder how much higher XRP price goes.” He then asserted, “I think a 10-dollar XRP is hard-coded.”

Levi suggested that rapid adoption of blockchain in banking could make a $10 XRP price feasible, though such an outcome is dependent on further shifts in institutional usage and market conditions.

Currently, the Citi and Coinbase partnership does not utilize the XRP Ledger or involve Ripple technology. The payment structure is based on fiat-backed stablecoins rather than XRP. This development underlines a clear distinction between stablecoins, which peg their value to national currencies, and XRP, which functions as a bridge asset for interior and cross-border transfers.

XRP price projection and market impact

Levi’s $10 XRP target reflects his speculative outlook, not a predetermined or currently supported figure. With about 56 billion to 58 billion units of XRP in circulation, a $10 price would value XRP above $560 billion in market capitalization. Levi identifies this figure as plausible only if the banking sector markedly increases its integration of blockchain transactions with digital assets like XRP.

However, industry observers point out that Citigroup’s stablecoin initiative does not create direct demand for XRP nor make the asset a settlement currency for Citi’s operations. Instead, the case illustrates how banks can integrate blockchain with fiat-backed stablecoins, while solutions like XRP continue to compete in the evolving landscape of digital payment infrastructure.
